working backwards to the answer: happiness
Could I do WITHOUT money? If I had to I could hold body and soul together somehow. I've seen it done before.
Could I do WITHOUT love? Ouch! That's a hard one. Not very well, but I could continue on, trying to be loving nonetheless. Could I do WITHOUT health? I am old enough to have faced death -- and to continue to face death -- in the eye. Again, I've seen the unhealthy continue on and I could continue on until the last breath. Could I do WITHOUT self-confidence? If I had to. I have seen very scared people nonetheless get things done. Could I do WITHOUT happiness? Totally, probably not. Sometimes it helps to have one or two benign delusions about how one is doing, but if I couldn't figure out some miniscule way to be happy I had might as well die. ***One of my favorite books has always been the novel about the slums of Calcutta, "City of Joy" (1985) by Dominique Lapierre [the 1992 movie fairly faithfully covers the first third of the book]. Certainly the book is about happiness in the absence of money and health. Self-confidence was in short supply, but they did have love and a definite modicum of happiness. [see the website for City of Joy Aid: "Lapierre has long chronicled the strength of the human spirit": http://www.cityofjoyaid.org/impact.html ] |

49.3 people are looking for happiness? Just goes to show what a miserable place the world has become!

The question didn't say LOOKING for happiness. It was asking us what we would value the most if we could only have one of the five listed items. That 49.3% of us are willing to settle for happiness [no one said "how much"] suggests that we do NOT view the world as a miserable place. I do hope that you -- and everyone -- might find a little bit of happiness even if money, love, health, and self-confidence are harder to come by. Shalom.

I belief that everybody values happyness the most, even if they don't realize it or if they call it different.
But how do you reach happyness? Thats the big question. Many many people think they will gain happyness through i.e. nonstop partying or through being rich or powerful. But IMO all those things are not directly connected to happyness, you can never become happy through one of those. No, IMHO happyness comes from within oneself, it is an attitude. You have to be happy in the first place, otherwise the fulfillment of any other desire has no power to increase your happyness. In contrary, there is a danger that your other desires are keeping you away from happyness if you mistake them as means to become happy. -Dani |
