I gave my answer about what I used ... was the damn Lariam . if the question would be " what do you consider against malaria for your further travels? " ...I think it would be "no medicine, just sleeves + deet + mosquito net " or "Doxycycline ".

Lack of anger management is an unfortunate chronic symptom of Malarone usage.

Are you sure you can blame Malarone?

Oh great, it really is worth spending an hour or so catching up on threads when you find a gem like this one

We took Malerone on our last trip, with no APPARENT side affects, but may have to re-think the matter for our next trip...

i was prescribed malarone by my doctor here but it was so expensive i decided to get antimalaria in sri lanka my first port of call. so i went to a pharmacy and spoke to the doctor there and he gave me chloroquine, 2 tabs once aweek, he said no need to take it really in SL as not the malaria season, but it will be fine for india. it was sooooo much cheaper u wouldnt belive. like 20cent basically for 12 tabs.
only thing is it made me so sick after i took it i didnt bother finishing the course and just used deet lotion and the rayban spray in my room. (that rayban is brilliant)

my question is..... since I've read in a number of recent India travel books and on the CDC website that chloroquine is NOT recommended for India because of resistant strains of malaria, why is it still being prescribed? (I've taken malarone with no side effects whatsoever.)

It is never prescribed on its own for India, it is used as a combination with proguanil to take care of the resistance strains.

hi anders, what does it mean 'resistant strains' ... is it an area or a type of mosquito or a season?
thanks

With "resistant strains" I mean that some of the malaria parasites has developed resistance against the anti malarials. I'm not a malaria expert but as far as I know they are not limited to any area or season although I think it is usually the falciparium malaria that develops resistance.

I have been to India five times, and stayed between four and six months. I have never used any anti-malaria drugs while in India (or South-East Asia),
I have heard too many bad stories relating to the use of these drugs.
I must say that I met very few people taking these drugs, and I believe that unless travellers are venturing into heavily forested areas, where Malaria is rife, there is little risk.
Correct me if I'm wrong!
We took our son to India in 2003, as he was in bed after sunset, under his mosquito net, I did not give him any anti-malaria drugs either.
In India I met only one foreigner who reckoned that he had caught Malaria, but I think that was just a case of too many chillums!
Just for the record, we have a French friend who spent 20 years living in India and he never caught anything!
