Read this:
Tourist molested while trekking. If you are experienced and know how to be vigilant, it may not be a problem. But if things "don't work out", just don't blame the locals ![]()

Scared and excited
I'm going to India in a few weeks for the first time and I'm going alone... I'm both scared and excited - and it's the most amazing feeling. I'm looking forward to this challenge and I'm sure this trip will be as no other trip I've done before. I've always traveled as a couple, but I think it's very healthy not to make your relationships to define things you do in your life - and this time my man is actually happy for me that I'm going alone and I think it's great. Thanks for helping me fight my fears with this thread

With all due respect to someone I do admire I think that the survey is a bit narrow. While I do prefer to travel alone I have had many satisfying trips with others (and some not so). It depends... One time I spent a magical time in Rishikish with an Indian family I met on the road. Their simple faith was warming to the heart and 30 years later it is one of my fondest memories. I also enjoyed travelling with my sis in law. Even though it cramped my style I had greay fun and learned a lot about adapting. It just depends..

I think the field is a little narrow too (though a good question to raise). I had always travelled alone until this year and although there were some down sides, mostly because I'm used to being selfishly independent, it was really interesting to see the changes in myself as a traveller when I was with someone else. It creates freedoms that I hadn't thought it would and i think as long as you're able to still do the things that are important to you (and get space when you need it), it can be wonderful to share the experience. Still, there are a limited number of people who want to come to India with me, so next year I'll go it alone again (not that you're ever really alone in India).

I just checked out that couchsurfing site and signed up! I'm waiting for a reply and perhaps will have a place to stay while I'm in Calcutta! What a cool idea...

I've signed up for couch surfing too! Woo!! Not sure I'll actually take up a couch (will see how my instincts guide me on that one) but it would be great at least to hook up with people locally who know the area etc. It's a fab idea! :-)

Tough call , considering that people have varied preferences.I personally find it more fun to travel alone as i do not have to think about the comforts, wishes and whims others. But then there are times when u feel lonely and wished there was someone to share you experiences(and costs).
Be careful to take travellers (in case you are in the mood for company) and not tourists , else you might have to dump them midway before they make your trip unforgettable(hope u understand in which way....) |

Never traveled alone, but willing to do so.
The lonliness and self-dependency are big worries, alone in a foriegn country. Its amazing how many on this forum share the same interests for traveling, alone especially, and the inspiration I am thankful for ![]() |

I travel alone and sometimes with friends too. Travelling alone allows you to change plans on the fly. You interact with more people and don't have to conform. On the otherhand in a group you can afford to be more adventurous.. Both have their advantages.. its entirely your call!
