Well...
I think that the first trouble with generalising about the Indian 'race' is that there isn't one!
We've been here before, and some people say that 'Indians' are more the same than they are different, but a Punjabi seems very different to a Tamilian, to me. I live among Tamils; the Punjabi was chosen almost at random for the illustration. Even between Tamils and Malayalees there are noticable differences... but as a person living at this end of India, I find Northern Indian stuff a bit 'foreign'.
Of course... I'm generalising here about the people from the example states, and I guess I have to say that there are some fairly big differences between some communities in the same state, even.

Over here I would like to emphasize a point, even though I am not knowledgeable enough to remember the exact number, however "Call Centers" are less than 25% of the outsourcing business in India. The remaining work is non call center i.e. accounting, data processing, transaction processing at the low end and Asset Management, Engineering and other thing that I am not aware of at the high end. For e.g. A latest Computer chip, which is used in one of the well known gaming console was developed by AMD in its India center..

<<Oops forgot to quote... this was about belief in generalizations"
I DONT either!! Lets list down some real "crap" in the name of justifed generalization (to get a flavor of how it feels)
1. All men leave thier stuble on the sink because they hate shaving!!
2. Women are better liars than men!!
3. Women can multi task better than men!!
4. All blondes are stupid!!
Oh come on, I can keep listing them out.. but the fact remains that we need to "suspend our judgement" and learn some patience before we conclude...
Well, the next funniest thing I will hear is, "India has been declared a cooking nation" Phew!
And well, what are Indians good at.. 1 billion things, hardly enough space to list them out here...

Sorry I am monkey jumping between posts and being trigger happy!! No Mary, no offence at all.. and let me exude my "free speech" on this topic, since its my area of expertise...
Lets take 98% want ban on Indian customer support:
- A large corporation (read Fortune 50) saved over 1bn dollar in the last 3 years by outsourcing support (customer, technical, back office, finance, et el) to India. Now lets see what it meant to them in other aspects:
1. Customer satisfaction (measured in web and phone surveys) top box scores as compared to 5 years ago is 17% points higher!
2. Wing to wing (turn around time for a particular request) is reduced by 43% due to automation, process excellence and innovation practices (all indian)
3. People complain about language and fluency issues (mostly in customer service, they dont care two cents in tech support) but ALWAYS are in wow about empathy and follow up skills.
Now, given the above case study.. why would not companies want to get to India for support.. because some politically sponsered survey said 98% (well, i have an aversion to surveys... 98% can mean anything given the population size) think that they should ban indian support
funny... very funny.More companies will come to India.. more industry verticals (like bio engineering, pharma research et el) will move in.. because....
QUALITY : is a component of cost and speed.. and everything costs money.. and we usually dont need the quality we think we do...
Am I way outside the limits on this topic??
Couldnt resist, I do this for a living!

I agree. Everyone in India knows there is unity in diversity amongst the interesting qualities of the different regions of the country! Rajputs are known for their exceptional bravery, for example, and are proud of it. It's only in the west we have so much objections to allow differences to exist which is a bit crazy I think.
These differences are what add to the charm of things. Just look at EU. All these countries are not the same. One day, the entire EU will perhaps be one single nation and the nations will be like states...
But the characteristics of the different Europeans will remain.

No, you're not outside the topic. In all sincerity and to give you a view from our perspective, we go nuts over here if we get Indian customer support on the phone... Absolutely livid. The only reason companies contract outsourcing to India, china or wherever, is MONEY. And these survey's had no political motives, but were conducted by banks and manufacturers who love to outsource and save money and grab more profit. The fact that customer dissatisfaction is so high and they continue to outsource shows how much they love to save that money of theirs, and customer opinion and wishes make no difference when it comes to money! It's got nothing to do with "excessively bright workers in India that the west cannot live without" as someone once assumed in an Indian article I read. The companies save loads and loads of money using a $3-500 a month worker instead of one that costs $3500. In other words; you are being used.
Many people have started to refuse to use or buy product or services from companies that outsource too much.
Let's be frank here. If India started hiring outsourced phone-support from America, for, lets say, customized Indian phone booking of Pujas/Homas, customzed traditional sarees or wedding procedures, available feature by feature... Imagine the frustration to call this kind of support and get them to understand all your questions! Half of them would never even have heard of a pujas, cannot know the difference between a homa and a puja, and and only refer to aping the text written for them!
This is what is happening with outsourcing of Indian services to the west. The people simply don't understand who the client is and are not used to problem-solving issues.

I agree! Your thread is really tasteless.

You may be right! I came across math classes in Singapore that were incredible! Little 4 year olds excelled in math better than a well-educated 30 year old. They too were not allowed to use calculators, but used the old chinese system with beads.I felt truly small seeing them in action!

That's personality traits or habits. That's different than cultural traits or genes.I've got one habit I generalize and am convinced is true:
More me than women stand up when they pee!
Now try and prove my generalization wrong..

If people subtly let you know they don't necessarily agree with you, you just skim right over it, judging by your five subsequent posts that I just merged. (I have a feeling you also realize the mods have been trying to keep this thread that's turning stupid for no good reason off the front page, but you keep reviving it all the same.)If people get less subtle about it, you go on about your right to free speech.
Remember there are 19,000+ members here last time I checked and god knows how many visitors. Maybe check out the scene a little before pressing on. It's well-meant advice mind.

None of the above
I would say Indians are best at explaining simple things in a very complicated way

I agree with you Mary..whoever said that the thread was tasteless was actually tasteless himself..Its like going in a serious discussion and simply write "I like it" ..
