General Observations
I would say cooking would be on the top of my list. Folks are making true and general observations of a people. Doesn't mean it is true for every person or in every situation.
I agree on the poster about time. That (even as an Indian) drives me crazy. I hate organizing events with fella Indians because of that. a true lack of respect for another person's time.

Also do not count out political corruption. But if you are indian, you shouldn't be sitting around complaining about it but rather do SOMETHING (ANYTHING) about it so the country would change for the better.
Aside Note:
Matter of fact i am sick and tired of how people (indians in particular) are always saying how their country wouldn't improve because of political corruption, etc etc etc. My message to them is: why dont you get off your bum and do something about it! Maybe then, you will go places!

Ah but the trick to democracy nick it's to boil it down to what the voter will do on that first act of democracy, the election, the rest is about the politicians and the personalities.
India does this rather well. Though I have to agree with Agni like the Scots there is only so much sitting around whinging you can do, there comes a time when you have to stand up and fight for your rights! And if need be bring culprits to task!

errr.....we are,we are. Don't push us. & at least allow us the whingeing while we go about our daily lives i.e. through the daily power cuts, water shortages, crowded commutes all the while cursing the ministers & babus for the shortsightedness in their decision for a single 40 ft rd(in theory) through the heart of the city. The last time I checked, I was not Hercules who could clean the augean stables in a night but I pay my taxes(unwillingly & powerless to stop that too!). :-)Allow me my daily whinge! That's all the rights I ask for.
& I'm sick & tired of people, who are sick & tired of people whingeing about government /political corruption.
Laziness is not that much of trait in India, a lack of civic sense and political participation maybe. I'd argue for /MORE/ political participation till we either balkanize ourselves or form a coalition of special interest groups.
wait a minute! that's the scene, right now!

On second thoughts, I'll stay. at least I'm allowed to whinge, in a low key way. there I might be arrested /even/ for that.....thanks but no thanks.
:-)
Perhaps it's just worded strangely but isn't it sort of hard/offensive to generalize about a group of people like that?

I have to agree with you Indiadancer. I certainly don't think any offense was intended by the poll, but it does rather construct the 'other'.
The 'other' generalises and constructs cultures that are not your own as static and unchanging, when in fact all cultures are dynamic, flexible and constantly changing.
I'd probably be a little unhappy if the poll was...
'What do British people do best?'
a. Steal other people's back gardens and tell them they can have it back when they've earned it back.
b. Lose at sport
c. Laugh at themselves
d. Produce the best pop/rock groups
e. Complain about the weather
f. Ruin Ibiza
g. Get Drunk
h. Large it big style

Reason: Bad grammar, and typos
Apart from the little boxes that this poll creates, how realistic are categories such as "giving a party"...not all travellers go to parties given by locals in India, so how can they comment?
If you ask me, Indians are pretty good at throwing Diwali bashes where they drink a little too much and attempt the bhangra and play cards all night....
The poll results make me feel that India might appear to be a nation of cooks, when, like any other country, it has people of varied interests/occupations/skills etc

I've been holding my tongue on this but since it keeps resurfacing on the main page, I'll add that I find it really offensive. India is a nation of millions and such simplistic generalizations really just help build unrealistic stereotypes. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that it's not the intention, but it's what keeps coming through to me. It's not really about political correctness--just about respect and understanding.Sorry... rant over.
