Indians aren't adventurous enough?!?

Do you think Indians are absolutely non-adventurous? Or aren't adventurous enough? Is it because Indians are afraid of the unknown?
Please elaborate.

Could you define "adventurous"?

Nowadays, thanks to channels like National Geographic, AXN, Discovery etc, adventure sports activities such as trekking, mountaineering, base jumping, paragliding, skydiving etc are seen on telly.

The children love it and are already predisposed towards such activities.... much more so than say 15 years ago. Personally, I am into trekking and mountaineering for quite some time.... have tried out hang gliding... and I have seen this "adventurous" spirit in others too.

Again, could you define "adventurous" for us? It needs elaboration.

Hope this answers your questions, however I know I can be more adventurous. As for us Indians at large, I think we are a mix adventures and cautious people.

Life itself is an adventure for the common man, i guess. Perhaps its when life becomes predictable and boring that people look out for other avenues for adventure.

a peak-time ride in a Mumbai suburban train is adventure for me..

It's a daft question to which Bigzero has come closest to giving an answer.

No, adventure doesn't depend on being able to afford a skiing holiday, though I can see that as one interpretion.

In fact, maybe life is more of an adventure to the poor, an adventure being living without any kind of day to day surety.

How much of an advenure is life when you don't know if you will get lunch? or dinner?

In which case let us hope for as less adventure in the world!

hmmmm..i think there is some lost in translation going on here in some of the responses and the question itself...

angeleyes (are you an abba fan?...). you are from bombay..if living in it is not an adventure, then i would like to know what it is...the monsoons in bombay, the peak hour local train ride...?

a society is on the move, i think the younger generation is far more than what their parents were. affordability is another big thing..who's going to pay for it? if you look at the upper middle class, yeah you have fat cat salaries but you also have fat stresses to go with it..and by the time, the weekend rolls around, you are just beat to try do anything major..tied to the daily grind i suppose...some of the other classes of society, its adventure to make sure meals are present on the table with persistent inflationary pressures on various fronts..

there are many exceptions to the norm...yogesh could be one

flights out of india are increasing, more people are travelling out. connectivity is on the rise with cheap flights and what not..and people are becoming mucho independent with diverse career choices along with dilution of some of the society's rigidities.. i guess along comes adventurousness if thats what you mean..

adventurous in eating?..adventurous in their music tastes? adventurous as in stripping of clothes and running naked in churchgate [downtown bombay]? clarifications please..

Stating poverty at each and every question does no good. Those who afford to travel, they travel. Those who cant don’t, now what’s the big deal with that?

I mean in many places in India you don’t have electricity, let alone internet connectivity, I don’t see you giving up your computer and internet connection for this.

As far as adventure goes, for me it is not about traveling to far flung places, spending huge amount of cash, or traveling out of country or skydiving!

It can be as simple as going for a small trek near your favorite hill station/holy place. Going to a place which not many people go to can also be an adventure, traveling in local buses to reach your destination, trying out local delicacy, taking a horse carriage or a bullock cart to reach the destination, the list is endless.

I think we indians are quite a adventurous lot!

See we are constantly travelling - from the outskirts of the village to the inside, from the village to town and from towns to cities. We have a large migratory population which travel to a new place looking for jobs, they then after a lot of struggle ( read adventure) get some what settled, they then have to go back to the Village every some time - this travel is an adventure for these poor souls, they then bring back with them their families, extended families, friend and the adventure begins again.

The lower middle class travel to their native places or to places of pilgrimage - imagine putting together a group of your family, extended family, your inlaws , their extended families and travelling with them all together in a state transport / semi luxury buses around the country on bad quality roads with overloaded traffic comming from the other side. what an adventure if you are saved from accidents you are making sure that your mother/ father / Uncle / Aunty and your mother father/ uncle /aunty in law, are not fighting with each other.

The new money middle class / Upper middle class has the money to throw and are heading to the hills in summer and beaches in winter and ofcourse the new destinations amusemnet parks/ Water parks, where the safety standards are often overlooked and you can fall terribly ill. they still go - adventurous enough for you.

The rich well they can really be adventurous what with the page 3 parties, drugs, alcohol, drunk driving

And the simple mumbaite - travel by the local train at peak hrs and try to survive that - very adventurous

I hope the OP can see the point I am trying to make
