Midnight children is such a boring book that I could not read more than few pages.

I forced myself to finish it because everyone raved about it, but I hated it. Haven't been able to read his stuff since.

Currently trying for the 3rd time to read A Suitable Boy, Vikram Seth. Now this one I love but I keep putting it down and 4 months goes buy and I have to start over. Keep reading smaller books inbetween!

I loved Midnight's Children! I had to work at it, though; it is a very demanding book (demanding of the reader).

It is so clever, not the least in the way that he sets up the narrator to be so unreliable and to make such glaring errors so that the reader will identify the history as a very personal interpretation of the narrator.

I found it rather interesting that his eventual mate in Midnight's Children was named... Padma!

I guess sometimes life imitates art

(At the same time, his novel "Fury" also seem filled with prescient autobiographical detail.)

Of course, having a weakness for brainy older men myself I support this undertaking wholeheartedly.

Thumbs up What does it matter?

What does it matter how long they stick together? He has a wonderful time with her (who wouldn't?) and maybe she ends up a little bit smarter and wiser....(I don't think they have sex all the time, so they will spend some time analyzing and discussing things).....and someday Padma Lakshmi will start writing her own novel...mark my words!!

They Are Getting Divorced!!

OK folks. No one was right on the poll. It lasted about 3 years, I think. I suspect they've been apart a long time though. Padma seems to have a great career going on the excellent reality show "Top Chef" here in the US.

Read all about it. For a break from real news

Thought those of you who participated in this poll might be interested in the final outcome.

My question. What is Sir Salman's attraction? He gives me the creeps. And I don't like his writing, though I'm in a minority on that one.

In a country of over a billion people with the biggest diversity of "looks" I've ever seen, from skin color that ranges from white to black from statures that range from very tall to very short, with genetic influences from just about the whole rest of the world (thanks to assorted invasions over thousands of years), I find that a very peculiar thing to say.

Or did you mean because she isn't wearing a sari and I've misread what you said

I mean't what it looks like. If you were to ask me what country she was from, India would be my last guess. She does'nt look Indian IMHO.

Some of the most diverse looking people i've seen are in Honduras of all places. I've spent alot of time there and there's soo many different looking faces for such a small latin country.
