Well, with you living in the Garhwal Himalayas, I am sure you don't need to go out traveling that frequently

Keep Enjoying..!!

I try to get away for at least 1 month every year:

2003 - 2 months (Europe)
2004 - 1 month (Europe)
2005/2006 - 9 months (Middle East/India)
2007 - 1 month (Morocco)
2008 - 2 months (Middle East/Caucasus)

I also try to take at least one city break (4 days to 1 week) during the year (since 2003 to Amsterdam 3 or 4 times, Prague, New York, Edinburgh, Copenhagen, Rome twice). With Ryanair, it's often cheaper to get to mainland Europe from Dublin than it is to take a train across Ireland.

I'm planning to spend the next 12 months travelling in north Africa, the Middle East and India.

That's amazing... Where do you get the time and money to travel so much and for so long..?

Ideally, when planning a trip, I like to include some places I've already visited, as well as new places.
I actually meant to ask that in terms of India... but this is even better..!!

Keep traveling and enjoying..!!

I don't have a permanent job, I save every penny I get, don't go out much at the weekends, and I travel on a relatively tight budget, but one that I'm happy with. Luckily many of the places that I find most interesting also happen to be very cheap by European standards.

I guess the problem with most people, including me, is the job... Guess either I have to take an early retirement, or wait for retirement...

Sadly, both seem too far off for now

Not only that, but if you live in Western Europe, and are flexible about when you fly, you have access to incredibly cheap flights.

Several years ago, before dukkha was posted to the UK, we used to visit a different country for a long weekend nearly every month. Many of those flights cost us only Rs 800 INCLUDING taxes.

Of course the budget airlines only have a few seats on each plane at that price, and they have to be booked in advance as soon as the offer appears, but if you're interested in "travel" per se rather than in getting to a specific location on a specific date, you can travel pretty much free.

In a recent promotion, they were offering flights INCLUDING taxes for Rs 80 - for those few passengers, they rely on them spending money on checking bags, paying for priority boarding, buying food on the flight and duty free.

Those that travel every few months, how do you find new places... or do you repeat some places that you really like?
It depends upon the span, wealth & expanse of the region you mostly travel. For myself, I travel mostly in INDIA, to be precise east & NE India. My job doesn't permit me to go for a long long vacation. So I have to stick to one/two 7-8 day trip an 3/4 weekend trips(2-3 days)per year. There are lot to explore in India and the online resources/ travel magazines often provides new/off beat destinations to head for.

No vote because of definition problems.

How long and far a journey will qualify as Travel, and what's your idea of Holidays?

The last few years and hopefully several more to come, I think London and/or continental Europe will see me at least once a year. I aim at one major (= at least one month) Asian trip per year, concentrating on India and China. Four of those since '03. I'm retired and an atheist, so the concept "Holidays" doesn't quite apply. A modest pension and a couple of persistent customers take care of the financial aspects.

Interesting Poll & Interesting Answers

I wish I knew what drove me to travel. I do know that it wasn't from anyone in my family, because I alone have the "travel bug".

I do know that when I was very young I collected brochures of far off places and the names of things had a magical quality. Like Bombay Rum! It's inexplicable the desire to see places I've never been. Whether in my own country or far away.

When I was younger and working full time, a trip might only be 5 days long. My jobs never gave vacation time off until after you worked a year and then only 5 days. So, when I was younger, just once a year a short trip.

I had no desire to accumlate anything and saved my money only for travelling. I thought I would grow out of this, but I never have and now I am retired and can travel almost as much as I want except for currently being chained to my home by an elderly (15 y.o.) dog! I shouldn't say "I" because I have a husband who also has the travel bug and we worked and saved for many years so we could travel when we retired.

And we do also have access to excellent travel bargains & flights.

Hi Camelgirl!!! I have similar story like you. No one else in my family & close relatives suffer so much from wanderlust syndrome. Surprisingly, history & geography were my most favorite subjects in school which are generally much hated. There used to be a geo text book in standard five where it depicted the cultures, features of different regions by stories like 'Peshan, the Lap boy', 'Ali of Egypt','Pedro, the rubber collector from Brazil' and many more. These stories created much curiosity in me about those countries & my dad bought me an Oxford School Atlas of higher standards. I used to be charmed by those details(though couldn't convince anyone why).As the years started to go by, I fell in love with geography, history & maps deeply. Travel literatures, anecdotes of great explorers and internet connectivity added spark to the fuel. Now, only passion/aspirations apart from day to day usual commitments revolves around travel.Fortunately, I have ample wealth(though on budget)and assumable a lot of years to live to explore entire India and SAARC nations. Constraint is my job will never permit me to go on long treks/trips.

Due to "living" here for almost 4 years on back to back tourist visas, there were repeated visa runs to kathmandu and bangkok, with a trip back to visit my folks every 2 years.

Calcutta a few times a year, mostly to eat and do a bit of shopping - I occasionally miss city life, and all it has to offer.

Now, with my shiny new entry visa, and the prospect of PIO card in the not too distant future looking forward to spending more time travelling in India. The list is long.

First stop Ladakh/Leh in June next year. Can't wait. Due a trip to Ireland in 2010 as well. Hoping to bring hubby to visit a few places in France/Spain as well though. Going back to Ireland never really feels like "travel" or "holidays", so determined to go somewhere else for part of the trip.

Many more hours of research, trawling indiamike, to decide what comes next in India though
