Water a la Asia

I never had trouble taking showers with a bucket and a rope from a well in Hikkaduwa and Arambol. I wore a swimsuit so that I could use several buckets.

While trekking in Himachal Pradesh, Zanskar and Ladakh I would use a one litre plastic water bottle after my morning constitutional. The Nalgene water bottle has a plastic ring that keeps the loose top attached at the neck of the bottle. I hold the bottle with my right hand and clean with the left. I NEVER lend my water bottle to others to use for this purpose. Later in the day I will use the same bottle for drinking water. Water and the left hand are far superior to toilet paper. I clean with water a la Asia over 99% of the time. Practice what you preach!

In America we drive on the right side and have the steering wheel on the left. That way drivers can wave their left hands at each other. No wonder there is so much road rage in the USA!

Using left hand and water seemed much easier to accept while on a vegetarian diet. Now that I'm back home it's bum fluff as usual. When in Rome and all that stuff.... A word of warning about loos on trains. The hole down to the tracks is large enough to pass a wallet! Make sure you don't have anything loose fall down the hole while squating or washing up. It's not cool to pull the emergency cord so you can run back to look for your visa card. Have heard via a FOAF (friend of a friend) that this has happened.
Train toilets are definately an Indian experience........

Mrs Shaktipalooza has converted me to using the water bucket technique instead of the paper smearing method those filthy savages in the west are known for.

We'll be outfitting our bathrooms with spray hoses during the impending remodel.

The water method doesn't work that well with 'western toilets', but I do prefer it with squatters. I agree with those who have mentioned the benefits of hose and spray.

I made an interesting discovery while perusing my Indian wildlife photos -- as can be seen below, the tap shown has a tapered nozzle so a length of ordinary surgical tubing would make a satisfactory do-it-yourself alternative. Not all taps will have a similar nozzle, but this particular one (along with nocturnal visitor, Fred) is quite familiar.

(memo to self: add 1 metre surgical tubing to packing list)

Cats. Persian are the most comfy, but shorthaired leave less residue. And then in goa, one can develop a close relationship with the pigs, isn't it?
