East Vs. The West Coast of India: Which is prettier.

On my coming up with a usual pipe dream the wife and I are currently in debate (read quasi slanging match) about which coast of India is prettier.

She insists that it is the Eastern Coast with its rich cultural and scenic heritage of cities such as Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, Vishakapatnam, Puri and finally leading into the Sundarbans. She also feels that my preference for the Western Coast is due to my love for the partying in Goa, insisting that I have a woman tucked away there yada yada yada.

I feel that the western coast with places like Cochin, Mangalore,Goa, Mumbai, Daman, Diu, Surat, Bhavnagar, Somnath and rising up to the tip of Gujrat is the prettier coastal side of India. I feel that as a coast the beaches are prettier, the weather is better and the experience is a nicer one overall since one isn't so CUT OFF from the simple pleasures of life and hence one can appreciate the beauty more, nothing like a few chilled beers to make a place look better etc etc..

So this is a POLL,

Which do you feel is prettier and why?
1) The Eastern Coast of India
2) The Western Coast of India.
3) I really don't care take me to the beach.

I prefer the East Coast, because it's not stuck in the middle of the travellers' trail.

A lot of local travel though .. Just been studying the map. The Western Coast has Goa which is more POPULAR destination but there are large tracts that seem untapped.

Hmmmmm Will wait for more posts and poll entries.

Thanks Wonderwoman!

Shashank,

Don't side with my wife just for the sake of good food and drink.

he he he. isn't itthe only thing that a man lives for.

And coming to my preference, or your for that matter, we both have not seen anything. My experience of East coast is Zilch and on west I have seen Goa, Karwar and Varkala (Oh yeah, Bombay too). And I am sure your experience would also be in the same range.

So lets wait for the experts to roll in.

Shashank,

A wee bit more but Yes nowhere close to what it should be ..
So we wait.

I now know how a noobie feels after posting his first Q.
The waiting is well waiting..

In the poll it asks for the "prettiest" coast which undoubtedly has to be the west coast ,prettier beaches ,prettier women etc underneath it asks for "which do you prefere " and the east coast has to take that one ,less tourists ,and much more local colour so in the poll i have to tick the west coast .

Thanks freenote for pointing out a very obvious (though to be honest it slipped me) dichotomy in my original post.

Changed it to read which do you feel is the prettier coast.

Thus this is more focussed on which would be prettier to see to visit to experience.

Thanks too for your thoughts.

Cheers

Capt, what is prettier about it? Just curious because I voted West Coast.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Mumbai & Goa gal. Lots more to do & see, and I feel more at home there. I have requested hubby & kids scatter my ashes not in Varanasi but over the western ghats if Kashmir is not a possibility.

The West Bengal and Andhra Coast looks much more picturesque from the sea

But the coastline around Orissa, including the temple I was told was the Jagannath temple, was quite breathtaking.

Areas around Honavar on the West coast look very interesting. But the usual suspects- Goa and Kerala don't seem to as much. And further north (Gujarat and Maharashtra) is marred by oil rigs in the water and big industrial complexes on land.

The east coast is starting to get more than a few a few of those oil platforms too

Aye aye Capt & thanks Agree with you on Honavar, it's gorgeous indeed. Knew someone whose dad worked on one of the dam projects on the Sharavati river. We were invited for a visit, and had a blast.

Alas, too many areas in Orissa has gotten to be so dirty I hate going there. I'd love to be able to see it (and other places) by sea.

Capt, silly Q .. were you on a ship or on a plane? Capt sort of applies to both...

Hmmm I am thinking more FROM LAND than from out at sea .. but interesting perspective
