gotta agree with your post Dilli - all the comments are valid and if I were looking or a hill climber I'd probably go with the bolero as well.
Our safari has done very well so far (haven't been up into the hills but have been out and about in the mud outside of chandigarh). What I like about it is that it seems to have a bit more weight to it then the scorpio and sits really well on the road - but at the same time there is no shortage of power from the engine (we have the older 3 litre turbo model). We've kept it well serviced and aside from one problem with a seal on the propeller shaft - it been fine. Ground clearance is excellent.

Tata Sumo is not at all sterdy enough for rough terrains. I have suffered with Sumo in hills in each occasion however short the journey may be, sometimes even in plains. But Bolero or Scorpio
never betrayed till now for a single occasion. |

Best Vehicle for Hills
Bolero any day!
Have seen this vehicle doing all the rough terrains in the hills. In Himachal hills, the commercial version of Bolero, the Bolero camper is more popular as the vehicle can be used as a passanger vehicle for 5 passangers in the front and also can be used to ferry goods. Around Narkanda, Baggi area where 5 feet snowfall is a usual phenomenon, this vehicle is the only lifeline during winters till the heavy passanger vehicle starts plying.

well i was in leh this july and there were lot of innovas and taveras. manali to leh was in very bad state.but none of these were having any problem. they are also more comfortable than the mahindras. for your budget go for tavera. unless ur doing total offroading ,where there is a slight road tavera will be fine. u dont need 4x4 anyways unless driving in slushy or sandy conditions

Mine too. That was a well-reasoned recommendation.
And, although I've never driven a 4*4, I am aware that there are a few sticky situations they can get you out of that would have you sitting there with spinning wheels otherwise. |

Saurabh, mine is the original 2000 model, Euro II, 2wd. At it's best it wud give 10 kmpl in the city and 11-12 kmpl on the highway. Hill roads between 7 and 8. Overall it has performed very well over the last so many years.
Had taken a look at the 4wd also at ther time, but it had/has a major disadvantage - no independent front suspension. Hard as a bullock cart while driving, and that's only in the city! I understand the new Euro III Turbo has even better fuel economy. Have only had a test drive in the city myself. |

Oh yaar, BS 2/3 is exactly that - b.s. Euro norms have simply been renamed Bharat for desi purposes, they are exactly the same.
