Thank You Mike!
Thank you Mike for adding Goa into the list.
Somehow I missed it, as I was more concentrated on Cultural tourism. Probably my subconscious would have considered Goa for Beach Tourism only!!! However in my point of view, Goa can not be a destination of first choice, but add-on destination. What do you think??? |

In my opinion Goa should definitely be a first time listing. The historical and cultural significance of the state with it’s Portuguese influences and hippie trail background. I didn’t go their the first time, but made it last time and I would go again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again...

is this poll to get the opinion's of would-be first timers to india, or, to ask members where, in their opinion, would be the best place for a first timer to go?

My thought also. Is it only for first timers or for people who have been in India 10 or 15 times and we now have to imagine we are coming to India for the first time?
Could you explain whose votes you would like prince_anurag. Everyone's or just people intending to visit India for the first time? |

Depends
Depends on why do you want to go. (what's your psychological trip)
All those places are different "Indias". Rajasthan, if you are into the "old movies" trip (maharadjas, romanticism, Contrast between the harshness of the land and the history with the arabian nights atmosphere of some places, again against the nature of the places, forts, places of war) for example, etc. Each destination has its own and so have you, probably. No time now, but I'm sure others can detail the spirit of various places.

Yes indeed Watson! However could you suggest a person, who has never visited India, to visit Goa first of all. Goan culture can not been seen as pure Indian culture (as you stated- Portuguese influence and hippie trail background!). So could the first timer get the real flair of Indian culture, visiting Goa first???

Dear Steven,
This Poll is to ask members as well as guests where, in their opinion, would be the best place for a first timer to go? As far as I think, decision to choose any destination in any country for the first timer is mostly influenced by a person, who has already visited that country. Am I right?? I voted "Himalayas," because the hill people one encounters in typical hill areas (forgetting the Parvati valley and surrounds for a moment) are usually easier to get to like if you are a first-time visitor. There are fewer hassles in upland areas, and just about everyone who begins their trip in places such as Shimla, Darjeeling or Uttaranchal before heading for the lowlands comes away with good impressions of India. Those who begin in the lowlands (Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur...) occasionally get stung rather badly by touts and scamsters and seem by reaction to defend themselves against what India has to offer, missing many subtleties. That's only my anecdotal contact with other visitors; I didn't do a statistical survey or anything.
Your Royal Highness_anurag, I had no problems understanding what you wanted to do with this poll. It was fairly easy for me to imagine being a first-time vistor to India and then think back, over the places I have visited since that time (23 years ago!), which would have left me with the best impression of the country. BTW, could you offer a definition of "pure Indian culture..."?

Dear Steven & Alan,
This Poll is to ask members as well as guests where, in their opinion, would be the best place for a first timer to go? Everyone can poll- be he/she a first timer or a person who has already visited India. Thru the results of this poll first timers can always reconsider their decision in choosing the destination. And the persons who have already visited India can share their views & experiences, which would definitely help first timers! Am I right??? Thank you Evan for your beautiful presentation of Rajasthan and encouraging us to share our views & detail the spirit of various places. |

Dear Sir Toker,
Thank you very much for your invaluable suggestion of starting the journey from Himalayas. My intention behind this Poll was to bring out such kind of precious suggestions, which would certainly be of help to the first timers. As far as pure Indian culture is concerned, I meant to mention about any place where no foreign culture could be felt easily. As in case of Goa, Portuguese influence is quite significant. Though I'm not against Goa. Here, the question is for the first time destination in India!! |

Himalayas
I also voted Himalayas.
I like mountains and the pace of life is more relaxed than many other parts of India, people are friendy, don't hassle you and are helpful when you need help. This was a difficult choice as the same is also true of the people in many other parts of India. An easy introduction to India for first-timers. Be careful of the water though ![]() |
