OK, that's pretty much the best collection of photography I've seen anywhere. The site's not very well laid out, but patience (and a fast connection) will reward the dedicated viewer. Thanks for sharing the link.

Gorgeous photos! There were a few though where it seemed the people did not want their photo taken. This one perplexed me though; could the boy really have blue eyes or is it an artifact of the photo?

Well part of my confusion is that the outer edge of his iris is darker, but really I have no idea. I have never met an Indian with blue eyes. I think blue eyes are a recessive gene, but I don't know when they could manifest.
P.s. Does it take two parents with blue eyed genes, or is having the gene on one side enough?

The girl's name is Sharbar Gula, and she was found alive and well in Afghanistan in 2002.

Okay, thank you everyone for your replies. Very interesting. I had been wondering what his eye color suggested about his story, but apparently eye color is quite complicated.

I wasn't sure about how this worked, so I googled the subject. What I found (source):
"The exact color of the human eye is determined by the amount of a single pigment called melanin that is present in the iris of the eye. ... Eye color genes, through the enzymes they produce, direct the amount and placement of melanin in the iris."

"At one time scientists thought that a single gene pair, in a dominant/recessive inheritance pattern, controlled human eye color. ...The genetic basis for eye color is actually far more complex. At the present, three gene pairs controlling human eye color are known. ... The bey 2 gene, on chromosome 15, has a brown and a blue allele. A second gene, located on chromosome 19 (the gey gene) has a blue and a green allele. A third gene, bey 1, located on chromosome 15, is a central brown eye color gene.

Current scientific model says:
"The brown allele is always dominant over the blue allele ... The green allele is dominant to the blue allele on either chromosome but is recessive to the brown allele on chromosome 15. ... This model explains the inheritance of blue, brown and green eyes but cannot account for gray, hazel or multiple shades of brown, blue, green and gray eyes. It cannot explain how two blue-eyed parents can produce a brown-eyed child or how eye color can change over time."

Color variations can also be a result of albinism (lack of melanin production) or genetic mutations.

Steve McCurry took that famous photo of the teen who graced the cover of National Geographic. He's taken a lot photos around India and SE Asia. One of his books is in fact called "South Southeast". The cover shows a beggar outside the window of his taxi, during monsoon. It's such a cliche, in my humble opinion, to take that picture. Yawn. There's even a photo here on IM showing pretty much the same thing, and if I'm not mistaken I even commented on the similarity to McCurry's picture. You can tell I'm not a huge fan of his work.

I'd bet money the blue eyes mentioned in several posts above were done in Photoshop. You could get the same effect with tinted contact lenses, but--and this is only my opinion--it's not something you're likely to see on a small child in India.

I have no idea what that scientific analysis actually means, but I can attest from personal appearance that one can get a blue-eyed child from two brown-eyed parents (ie. I'm living proof!). The underlying reasoning, however, completely escapes me....
