Which way is it going?
Ok..it just struck to me and I got into this kind of quiz to guess the direction in which the train is moving in this foto taken by Bhaswaran.
Can any one guess the direction and justify it??? Am only guessing that its going to the left....no justification i cud give. Some photo-intelligent ppl here might just spot some clue to guess the right direction ![]() PS Bhaswaran, it wud be nice to see ppl guessing for sometime before you cud tell the answer...

Think about how a shutter opens (assuming the camera uses a mechanical shutter). Apart from that, I can't think of any other way of telling. And I can't tell from that anyway. I'd be interested to know.

Lucky, I thot the same initially
![]() BUT the right part of the train wud be moving as fast as in the other direction......and that wud also make it blurry.....and fading in the same level and manner as we see in the current pic. Had we got that side board at the top a little on the right side we cud have guessed it since it wud have left a nice trail of fading in the back or in the front ![]() this pic has been intriguing me.... Well its just possible that its impossible to tell the direction from the pic... unless Mr B tells the story. But lets us ask him to keep mum while we try work out some justification ![]() as of now am drained of any clues. |

Most people would take a photo of the train by pointing the camera at where it WILL be when it gets to you, not where it HAS been. Therefore, in this picture it is going from left to right.
Of course it is possible that after the train has passed the photographer, he will swing round and capture a shot as the train goes away from him, but I think the first option is more likely. Tim in England

In that case, if another train leaves Delhi at 40 km an hour at the same time as this leaves Bhubaneshwar at 45 km an hour, then when is lunch?

Lunch is in the resturant car which is the second coach from the left of the picture which is always to the rear of the first class coach in the foreground so the train is moving from left to right on its way to New Delhi.

Actually I made that up.
One thing to notice though is that there is sunlight shining on the right side of the concrete sleepers in the bottom right of the photo. That means the train is travelling with the sun on the far side or the right side of the photo. If this is the morning then the train is travelling west, northwest or north. If it is evening it is travelling east, southeast or south. Or, it is going the other way. Consulting the timetable to see when the train passes Balanagar-Dankuni will reveal which way it is moving. My guess is that this is train number 2301 which leaves Howrah at 16:55 therefore it's the evening train travelling north. Therefore it is going right to left in the photo. Easy! |

The train is moving from left to right, i.e. the photographer took the picture as the train was coming towards him. In India, in a corridor comprising two tracks, trains run on the left track. Seeing the electric pylons behind the train, as well as the trees, it is obvious that there are only two tracks where this picture was taken and the train is travelling on the right track, towards the photographer. One can see part of the empty track on the left on which the train going away from the photographer would have travelled.

My guess is left to right. I seem to remember the trains in India run on the same side as the UK, so would pass right hand side to right hand side.
I hope the photographer also carried a mirror to see behind him, as he appears to be standing in the middle of the tracks! Even with the amount of hooting that goes on on Indian Railways I wouldn't have thought it a good idea to be where he is. |
