Question Where will i keep my camera? Around the neck?

Hi there India mike!

Thank god for you people in here. Reading threads here has been a huge help! So thank you for that - Now on to the actual matter;

I'll be taking my beloved Canon G9 to India here in Jan/Feb. It's got the classic 'hang it like a tourist' straps. But i have a feeling that's not the safest option.

I figure i'd take a daypack with me, and by daypack i mean small backpack. But if i leave it there, i can't keep an eye on it?

Ohh, what to do what to do?

Thank you in advance

The camera. Looks small, weighs tonnes (And looks bulgy in a pant pocket) But takes beautiful pics!

You could do with it somewhere readily accessible for taking photographs. It will be pretty safe hanging from your neck, you can steady it with a spare hand when walking and still have the hand available when shopping etc. Works for me anyway . .

Neck or pocket is fine but when in India it's best to have it over the eye - 'cause there is always a photo op about to unfold somwhere near you.

Point, Shoot, Walk -- without putting the camera up to your eye

You might want to practice taking photos WITHOUT putting the camera up to your eye. Try it. You'll be amazed how well it works. You can set the focus for, say 10-12 feet, and, with experience, learn from the way the camera feels in your hand that it is pointed right at the center of the scene you want to shoot. Yes, I tend to be a bit paranoid when in crowds; to my way of thinking, devoting attention to adjusting the camera makes one a prime target. So, unless I'm in what I consider to be a safe space I'd rather "grab the shot" with my camera and keep walking.

True, true - Thank you for the comments!

I think I'll attempt some different options and vary when i feel it's needed - 70-80; I have the same thing going, hate it when you adjust and attempt different things. People will notice you and it will change the picture. I'll do some hip-shootin' homework while im here in Copenhagen!

Moo, peak, almighty & 70-80's - Thanks

Something else to consider

I'm bringing a larger camera with me (Canon 30D D-SLR) so I kind of feel your pain. I have a sling-type bag for it, which can be worn on the front/side or on the back. It wasn't terribly cheap but I like the flexibility of being able to wear it either front or back depending on the situation, and it's easy to pull the camera out and put it back without fussing too much. It's made by Tamrac and it's the "Velocity" series. Have a great time!

Depending on what you're more comfortable with, a bum bag (fanny pack? heehee) or a sling/messenger bag would be perfect. Otherwise the daypack's fine, just carry it under your arm or something if you think you're in a particularly dodgy area.

I think theft from a bag that's been put down (eg on the floor when you're in a restaurant, train, etc) would be a lot more common than theft from/of a bag you're carrying anyway, so keep an eye on it in those situations too.

Gold chains get snatched from around women's necks, but a camera around your neck is probably safe. Gold is quick money; a camera is not.

Certain situations like trains and railway stations, and some really crowded places may be dangerous, but most of the time on the street theft is less likely than in a European city.

Hang it around your neck and as Nick says chances of it being snatched is quite remote. In crowded places you can always hold it with one hand which I do.

Sounds good!

Guess i wont invest in a golden camera neckstrap?

If all goes wrong, i'll buy a messenger bag. Pretty used to those. The fanny pack (even typing that gives me the shivers!) is out of the question. I believe it's an international unwritten rule that sporting a bumbag/fannypack results in an immediate call to the fashion police?

Can't wait to go to india, you people speak so warmy of it - Need to see it all for myself!

Thanks again for all posts!

There are no fashion police in India

And yes, that heavy gold chain would be a foolish thing to hang the camera on.

Although they'd probably just throw away the camera!

Check the light weight vinyl-covered metal straps on the web page below. They comes in 17 inch (long enough to go around your neck or wrap around you wrist) and 6 inch (for your wrist) sizes. I have the longer one and I like it.

Guess the gold chain would as an advantage to both of us then? He'd have loot, and i could go pick up the camera he just tossed away?
