it's really too obscure for a good quiz location but there are probably a few people here who have been there.

I've not been there, but know enough about Manikaran to wonder if it might be the place. Your comment about the "steam" was what suggested it to me.

A "souvenir" from Manikaran as a prize?

You've given us a few clues there -m2-.

Is it Manikaran in the Parvati Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Honestly, for some reason I missed the page 2 posts before I posted this! Stayed there a few years ago.

My turn now. You won't be able to use Google image search to check this one, but I think you'll know it if you have been there.

First I thought nalagarh or Dehradun but I think it is more likely to be in Tamil Nadu.....
I must read some books before I give my final answer.

This is a great game you are playing! I hope that I am welcome here..

Wrong guess!

mountaingirl, you are more than welcome here - as is anyone else who wants to join the "guess where this picture is from" quiz.

I 'm sorry, but you are not right with TN, though. About 2000km too far south.

the picture doesn't ring any 'specific' bells for me, but will try to help narrow things down a bit. The distance from TN would indicate we are looking at northern foothill country which would have to be west of Nepal. I'm a bit more familiar with the HP foothill area and it doesn't look 'right' to me either, so I'd say we are looking at a town on the southern fringe of Uttaranchal. (MT was there last winter, but I'm sure he has HP pix in his bag as well, and this looks too wet for december anyway)

Part of the town appears to be hidden by the greenery on the right, but the lack of motorized traffic (apart from the scooter) would indicate to me that the town is quite small and at least 'once removed' from a RR line and station. Lots of power-lines, however, and the vantage point appears to be from a substantial building -- possibly the roof-top of a guest-house which could well be government run.

any other ideas?

am I getting warm, toker?

Getting slightly warm, -m2-!

This isn't the traditional view of this place, which is actually quite a large town (pop. 85 000 or so), and rather a famous one.

You're right about the "southern fringes of Uttaranchal," but wrong about the railway. In fact, the railway line runs across the picture, just beyond the first set of bushes and trees in the distance. Behind me, around 1km., is a very large river. I'm taking the photo from my hotel near the bus stand. By the way, it was taken in August.

There! I made it really easy peasy.
