Texting is done in a separate layer , that is created when you click the text icon in the tools palette. Check that the text is the topmost layer in the layers palette before flattening into a jpeg , if not click and drag the layer up in the stack.

I used to do proof and press passing for colour printing, I used to do phototypesetting, I was a Unix systems manager --- and yet, when people start talking about photoshop layers, paths, bitmaps and vector graphics, I just seem to suffer concept blindness. I'm sure if I could just start getting to grips with the language I could make some progress.

RAW format is unprocessed image, image as it is captured by your camera image sensor. It's what image is before is is processed by your camera into formats like jpeg. It's more or less an image you'll find in conventional film. This format is used mostly by professionals as it allows them to edit image on more accurately for printing by applying white balance, contrast and so on as original image data is not altered. Beware, RAW format image file is very large as it is uncompressed.

Quite right Londoner. The S5IS (which I think we are just about to buy) doesn't support RAW format - it seems Canon are preserving that for their SLRs and the G series compacts. Jpeg files have already been compressed a bit and every time you save them there's a little more data lost as a result. RAW is what's known as a lossless format, but yes, the files are huge.
I've read really good things about the S5IS - one review described it as the best overall superzoom camera, although others (Fuji, Sony etc) do parts of the job a little better. For me the big appeal is the big zoom, though it would have been nice to have a slightly wider angle at the short end. It might stop V complaining about not being able to take pics of far-away birds and mammals that I can get with my SLR. Nick, the lens cap does still seem to be an issue! Mantru - your photos look good to me. You might want to take a look at this forum (just watch out for the techies) http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php look for the S5IS in the small compact section. Just keep practising - and re-reading the manual! At least Canon manuals are usually pretty good. |

Raw Shooter Essentials, free, is another way to process .RAW files. Huge files as mentioned above, typically about double the size of JPEGs!

I'd really like to have one of those around-the-lens flash units. Built-in-flash and macro just don't go together; there is always going to be shadow.

Those are nice Nick, but expensive, around US$500.00 or so...
I have a cheaper, way cheaper, work around for that , use a tripod. I bought mine for around $20.00 at Wal****.Also consider building a 'Light Box' in your spare time: http://digital-photography-school.co...ve-light-tent/ and: http://jyoseph.com/blog/detail.cfm/post/18 EDIT: I see Vistet has a link to making a ring flash! Off to explore that... ![]() |

all those Canon-brand accessories are expensive. There might be a cheap alternative for the S1/2/3/5; I know there are cheaper wide-angle and telephoto attachments available.
Making a ring flash.... Hmmm... nice idea! A tripod would be good too, and it has been on my to-buy list for ever. Whenever I go looking they seem to be cheap and flimsy, or a bit to heavy and very expensive! Beetles do have a tendency to have wandered off by the time one has fetched it too! Yes, like the light box too. Hello Beetle! This way, please! Beetlebeetlebeetle! (Actually, I read a hint once, that professionals put insects in the fridge for half an hour. Makes them all sleepy so they'll pose for you, and they're fine when they warm up again) |

OK then, we won't talk about bug spray, turmeric, poisoned sugar, superglue...... Actually, I prefer not to use the onboard flash, or any flash (that opinion may change very quickly when I'm able to afford a nice 5-600 dollar flash unit). It's, imho, far easier to fix a picture taken at a high ISO setting (getting rid of the grain/noise) than to get all the nasty shadows out of a flash picture. I do have an ancient Canon 300D with a couple of decent lenses, one of them with image stabilization, as full disclosure. |
