Nikon P 90 and Olympus SP590, both are SLR like cameras but not SLR's whereas D40 is SLR so it depends on your choice whether you want a camera on which you can change lens or you want a camera with a fixed lens.
Between P-90 and SP590 there is not much to chose both have nearly same specs. Get the feel of both and one that fits better or feels better may be a better choice.

I have dropped the idea of buying point to shoot cameras. Now I wanted to buy an entry level SLR, but I am really getting confused about which camera to buy....the more I surf the net the more confusing it becomes...but I have shortlisted few cameras....I hope you guys can advice...

Pentax K100D super
Canon EOS 1000d
Nikon D40 (I heard there is some Autofocus problem)
Nikon D60

I will be travelling to sikkim in the month of May. And I need to make this decision asap.

Digital cameras with fixed lens are for ametuer photographers and used generally in capturing casual moods. SLR may it be digital or not are build for professionals with extra depth and more object oriented pictures. One can destroy the moment if he is not fully aware of what aperture, lighting, shutter speed and focus is. So choose Digital or DSLR accordingly.

As per my opinion choose digital camera (with or without SLR) with 10 megapixel or around and maximum zooming capacity. It will help you when you are travelling and want to capture a particular object or wide picturesque.

I have seen the specifications of Nikon P-90 which really impressed me but couldnot find Olympus SP-590UZ model. So couldnot do any comparison. I will see your shortlisted cameras within few days.

Please drop one message after finalising your gadget.

Thanks roygautam....I have finally shortlisted the cameras to 2.
The first one is Sony A200 and second one is Canon EOS 1000D. I have gone and checked both the cameras. I really liked the Sony A200. I heard there is not much difference between the pic quality in both of them. I think I am going to buy Sony A200.

Just got one concern I would also like to buy more lenses in future. In that regards is there are enough lenses for the Sony model. And are they cheaper or costlier than Canon one.??

My choice would be the Nikon D40.

Ken Rockwell makes a good case for it here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

The D40 does not have a motor in the body to run autofocus lenses. But as long as you get lenses with their own motor it's not a problem.

But many people have advised me against D40 (because of auto focus problem). Its also not availble in the market. But it was on JJ mehta website. Is it advisable to buy from JJ mehta...do they sell new or second hand cameras..and does anybody have any experience of online buying the camera with JJ Mehta? If yes , please share.

Sony Alpha 200 Digital SLR with 18-70 Lens is available for Rs26,995.00 with JJ Mehta website.
FREE : 2GB Kingston CF Card
Free : UV Filter and "V" Shape Bag
(In delhi I am getting this are 26,995 but with no free stuff)

Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens Rs 25,995.00 (JJ mehta)
FREE : 2GB SD Card (Or upgrade to Higher Capacity)
Free : UV Filter and "V" Shape Bag

Is sony lens of 18-70 is better than 18-55 lens of Nikon.

Just reviving this thread.. I'm not a professional photographer but would like to take photos of sceneries.. you can call a amateur photographer. I'm planning to visit interior villages of India and take some photos...

I was checking some threads in this forum and came across this. I have seen some D40 cameras at Rs. 20k in ebay. They are not listed in jjmehta.com.

Can you please advise whether D40 is outdated - are there issues like autofocus what OP has mentioned and what basic DSLR would you advise.

thanks
