New Canon camera, perfect for a trip to India

I have been waiting for a camera like this to come on the market. It seems perfect to bring to a dusty environment like India. The lens is a 28mm to 560mm (35mm equivalent) optical zoom. It has image stabilization and takes AA batteries. It has a traditional viewfinder and also has variable angle LCD monitor. It is so new that it hasn't been reviewed by the magazines or users yet.

Sounds good. I have used an older Olympus point-and-shoot for my travels and never found it to be lacking. It's easy to carry, no lenses to change and I don't have to worry too much about having it nicked.

20x optical zoom sounds a bit ambitious. I wonder if the quality suffers?

We will see when the reviews come in

There will probably be more distortion and haloing than you would get with more expensive lenses. Its 20x zoom with optical stabilizer is very good news for getting street shots and candid photos. These mega zoom cameras are getting better each generation, this one has manual exposure and manual focus options. It is just over one pound, very easy to carry all day long.

I used to carry around a nice SLR and three lenses in a bag. While it took great pictures, it is too much to lug around. I now have a pocket sized Kodak Easy Share. It takes simple pictures and can do a short video, for when that elephant lumbers down the road. Loss of quality, true. But it's always there when I need it. If someone decides they need it more than me, or I lose it, no great loss.

If you are going to get good people shots you need a fast zoom lens with stabilization. The new generation of small point and shoot cameras have no viewfinders... they rely on the LCD screen, no good for candid photography.

I'll keep my eye on it. I see that it hasn't hit the shops in Canada yet. I'm due for a new camera soon. My old Olympus is 4MP, but it has viewfinder, an excellent lens and a good 10x optical zoom so I still get great photos from it. I've been thinking about a DX80 with a couple of zoom lenses, but maybe I'll try an SK10...

Fantastic pictures, great color, well worth lugging around a large, high quality camera.

But the hidden jewel in Canon's line up (for digicam enthusiasts) is the A650. The SX cameras have always been let down by their lens, although hopefully that's changed with the SX10.

I've just bought a new Sony DSLR A300 with lens for about the same price as the SX-10. I know what I'd prefer. Admittedly the range won't be the same but the speed it takes photos at is a welcome break from my previous Canon digicams.

Seams to be the next step in the series that began with the S1 IS.

I have the S2 IS. I'm not running out to upgrade, but if money was flush, this one provides more temptation than the S3 or the S5 have done.

560mm zoom! And a tripod that shoots out of the base? But the Imagae stabilisation on the S2 really is good, allowing hand-holding at shutter speeds/focal lengths that would just give me blurs with an older-generation camera. As I love to get that bird up there on the branch, I'm sure this lens would be great for me.

As to quality --- I'm sure there are compromises. One doesn't see zoom lenses of anything like this range in pro series lenses.

Yes, it's located just behind the tiffin tin for those days when you stay out longer than expected.

Seriously, if this also has full manual controls it could be a good step up from my current Nikon Coolpix 5000i, which is only 5mp, but which also has that useful variable angle screen.

I've been seriously considering going back to an SLR, but much as I love the flexibility of an SLR, the sad fact is that all too often it got left at home.

$399 MSRP. Dang, looks like I am upgrading. When I went to my sons Marine Corps graduation I brought my pocket camera. I got some shots. Most were beyond the cameras capability. Missed some really good shots. Dang it. Here we go again.

Yes that is an excellent price, unfortunately that model only appears to be currently available in America, but at least I'm not tempted!

I'd expect that it will have full manual control, yes. My I2 IS does, not that I ever use it.

This may not have the bulk and weight of a 'proper' SLR, but it isn't going to be a pocket camera either, and my S2 gets left at home most of the time. It's big enough to need a specific 'take the camera' decision.

They are available from amazon.com. I imagine they have international shipping. Small print, ships in 1 to 3 months....never mind.

I have a new Sony DSC-W120; it has a Carl Zeiss lens and a view finder. It takes great photos here at home and I'm looking forward to using it in India.

This camera cost less than $200; is exactly the size of a pack of (regular length) cigarettes, and weighs less than 4 ounces! Perfect for travelling!
