This thread is a merger of two threads - first one emerged from the travel photography checklist thread as iamsomnath commented (below) that cellphonography is rather exclusive of regular photography, the second one was mobile clicks where all mobile photos were being shared by users, also started by iamsomnath.

So here's on the usage of the mobile phone as a backup camera. However, this thread is not limited to that. You may add your own cellphone / tablet camera reviews, checklists on what to do right, and what not to do, etc to this thread -

Now, there are situations where one of the following factors such as a - crowded location, inability to use both hands simultaneously, weight (think a hard hike up an unknown path), or simply decency and propriety would demand that the primary kit not be taken out of the bag or the car or just left at home.

In such cases one can use a mobile phone. Of late, I've had some good results using a newly acquired mobile phone as a walkabout camera, especially for street scenes. I've noticed that people are a lot less concerned when I position the phone in front of them as opposed to if I were to whip out a mid sized DSLR with a lens.

Few tips -

1. Steady hands - most important for using the mobile as a camera.
2. Remember, it's still a point and shoot camera - so all the rules about the light being at appropriate angles, white balance, ISO still apply.
3. Sorry, cant bounce flash! - so selecting subjects that wont be scared by a flash or suffer from a 'white-wash' is important. Also, no fill flash for those glam portraits.
4. Use your feet. It is true that there are mobiles now with an optical zoom (digital zoom is not a zoom), but in general you'd have to move.
5. Certain subjects - wildlife, sports, fast action, near darkness low-light- are beyond the capability of a P&S and therefore your mobile camera as well. So, don't curse the phone, just enjoy what it can do.
6. Also, mobile phone photos are more in line with photo documentation or memory making as I like to call it. If you're looking for a fancy bokeh, or depth of field, you'd have to stick to your primary gear only. But sometimes, any photo is better than none at all.

Sample image below. Shot by adjusting only the ISO and white balance.

^^^ Very relevant addition this. Like almost all gadgets, it is important to know the performance boundary of the mobile phone camera and creatively use that. With many digital filters available even creative photography a-la Lomo can also be tried IMO

cheers
Somnath

PS : Can a thread be started for exclusively cellphonography? No selfies please :-p

ha ha ha , as you say I fish out the EXIF data : Mi4, 3.9 mm, SS 1/1616, ISO 100. These days every bit of data , however useless , is being scrupulously recorded somewhere, scary :-0

Please share your mobile clicks here. Can become a fascinating thread

But but, half of my photos posted here since sometime in 2013 have been with a mobile. Situation deteriorated so much that Prakaant (notably) complained about poor resolution, sending me on the upgrade path.
