35,000 is about the price you would pay at a discounter in the USA. 42,000 is about what you would pay in a regular retail store in the USA. The same dynamic might be true in India. JJ Mehta may just sell more volume and can therefore offer lower prices.
Ask the guys at Mehta about the warranty and all that. I've never shopped there, but the price is reasonable. |

JJ Mehta is very reliable. My friends have been purchasing from them frequently. Their prices are OK too though I am a bit surprised that you are getting it cheaper at JJ Mehta. These guys do not leave out the manufacturers warranty. I had purchased a Canon S3 IS at Chennai for Rs 20,000 and the same was available with JJM at RS 27, 500. I had foregone the Canon warranty to bring down the cost.

What's the dilemma? The deal from Mehta is cheaper and has a two-year warranty, right? Do you know someone in Mumbai who can get it for you?

I bought this same camera from JJ Mehta over a year ago and have been very happy with it. I bought it sight-unseen and had them ship it to Delhi and there were no problems. They did send the Canon warranty card, but unfortunately for me my colleague who got the "deal" for me said he actually was a camera shop, so they didn't stamp the warranty, thinking his shop would! Otherwise, I do recall they sent the Canon warranty card. And the price they gave us was just as good as what they are giving you.

I have bought Tamron lens from JJ Mehta last year. They shipped it to me. Very good service. I did send the Demand Draft by Monday and had the lens on my hand on Thursday. The lens has no problems and gives decent pictures. What I known from others also, they are good. So go ahead and buy the 350D. They are also giving an offer now with 350D. with 49999 INR, will can get the Tamron 18-200 (28-300 superzoom 35 mm equivalent) as a package. You can also consider it. ![]() |

Let me tell u a small story. This mite have clues to the price difference. This relates to a 350D i purchased in Bangalore last year, from a guy who is probably his (JJM)cousin. Last yr, 350D used to retail at approk 57- 60K with bill and arnd 45- 50K in grey. Canon introduced a scheme where for 47K they were giving a 2 yr warranty and a 1gb CF card. This bangalore guy was selling the same for 44.5K (maybe taking a small cut in margin to improve volume), and I purchased from there. After I paid, He stamped the warranty card ASAP, but wouldnt give me a bill. Simply refused. I inisted that i need a bill as well, else I wud have purchased in grey tht was cheaper than 44k (as canon reduced price, grey prices had gone down to 37K). I said that if i want to claim warranty, i wud need a bill also. I finally had my way and got a bill as well. So while JJM will stamp ur card, he, in all probability will not give u a bill. Call em up, ask them "with bill" price. Not sure abt effectiveness of a warranty card if it cannot be supported by a bill. Cheers Ajay

Is this 'cousin' thing known to you, or is it a guess?
Either way, I don't think it very fair to say that one business will act in the same way as another. So far, I have not read any criticism of JJ Mehta --- but quite a lot of praise. And I would expect a stamped and dated warranty card to be just fine. Often one has to find the bill because the dealer did not stamp the card (which is difficult if it is a sealed box).

Nick,
When i moved to bangalore some 3 yrs back, I was told by some members that he is related to JJ Mehta (the guys who run the place OP has mentioned). Or probably he himself mentioned. I dont remember now. Though in hindsight, I shouldnt have mentioned that relationship- not relevant. When I was in Bombay, I have purchased from JJM. He used to stamp the warranty card, so that he knew that I (or anybody else) had purchased from him. Why? Becoz, big guys here give their own personal warranty for 6 months when u purchase in Grey. The price diff between JJM and the guy in calcutta could be a simple low margin- high volume issue, or it could be this. Therefore I recommended to the OP that he should ask JJM specifically if the price mentioned includes a bill. A post on a photography forum run by JJM on a similar issue: http://www.jjmehta.com/cgi-bin/yabb2...num=1176923620 There could be 1- 2 more posts on this in the past on that forum, but the forum crashed a few months back, so am not searching for that. Also, regarding ur comment on comparing business- typically large photography goods retailers behave more or less in similar manner irrespective of their location in India. The "business model" doesnt vary much. Cheers Ajay |
