IndiaMike photo review

Hi I'm Watson and haven't been a hard core IMer for a few years now- still I love the site and do surf it every now and again.

I surfed a bit on the photo section and remembered that I was once winner of "photo of the month" way back when. Ofcourse this makes me proud to no end. But then I thought about all the old and new winners and "their" story behind the pic. So please forgive me if someone else has already thought of this idea (I haven't trawled the whole huge site to see).

I thought of starting a thread for all the old pic of the month winners. Please do tell what went on behind the scenes and tell us what made your pic the pic of the month for YOU!

Here's mine:

Background:

Me and Katharina were walking through a flooded Varanasi and came up on this great group of cows chilling in the street. Needless to say we chose not to go through them , but rather picked an alternative route around this "blockade of cows" - what a great day! Walking through streets in any town in India and coming up on the amazing and unexpected is what makes India magical for me.

ps... I had no idea where to put this thread... so forum mods please move as u will.

Here is a link to my photo of Dhankar Lake that became the photo of the month.

The story- My husband, our guide and I had trekked to the lake in the morning hours and the day was partially cloudy. So I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this reflection of the mountains. And there was not a soul around by the lake apart from the three of us. And then while we were walking back I thought I saw two birds in the lake. Only on closer inspection they turned out to be beer bottles!!! Only our guide, Anjan, had the courage to wade in the water to take it out. Next 15 minutes all three of cleared as much garbage we could from the area. I mean how can anyone leave garbage in such surroundings?

Great thread, and I will look forward to further updates! and Very interesting inputs to start with from Watson and mridula!

btw why restrict this to photo of the month? It will be great if we can add any of our photos which we feel has an interesting story behind it..

Looking forward to a good photo-thread!

I agree no need to restrict it to photo of the month, what do you say Watson?

Yes I agree, there can be great stories behind pics which don't look as if they'd be interesting.

I guess that would be pretty cool! I figured though that there are already probably a few photo threads with a general topic overview. I'm for it though so let's open this up then for everyone

It would still be nice if a few photo of the month winners could find their way to this thread.

Good idea Watson.

I'd like to add here that so many of the photos posted here at IM are par excellence, offering glimpses of India that one is unlikely to find anywhere else, certainly not in tourist brochures. I have seen so many places through these photos that I will probably never make it to, pictures of places that I'd like to know about but which are perhaps too far away or too difficult to get to. So keep it up folks, keep posting.

And I love the Random mode where all the old photos, otherwise forgotten, get shuffled and come up for whoever is interested!

I only wish people would take just a minute to add a description to their photos. Pretty please......

PS: Nice photo, Watson.

Hello Watson, great to see your name online again.

I had a photo of a railway reservation form, I uploaded it and was horrified it never became 'photo of the month', many sleepless nights followed.

Anyway, the story behind the photo....I was looking at a reservation form and thought how useful it would be if it was on indiamike.

So, great photo, great story, and I still didn't make POTM.

Hey Steven,

Nice to see you're still one of the old dogs so active on IM. So what’s up with your pic? Gone forever? I do remember the time when you dreamed up the train info threads. That was a huge amount of work on your part!

So anyone have some train reservation forms they can upload for Steven? Definitely should receive an honorable mention as photo of the month!

I just checked, and I'm embarassed to say that it's the 6th most popular 'photo' on indiamike with 17240 views, I guess there's a lot of very bored people out there.

http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...47/limit/views

A little side note, that reservation form isn't the official form, I edited it a lot to make more room for writing details, the official forms are for people who've mastered minature writing.

I like this thread idea, too. Look forward to read more stories, and might have to make up some of my own.

(Does the title strike anyone else as a bit clinical though? I thought it had to do with rating photos, and almost skipped it. Something like "The Story Behind The Photo" sounds so much more interesting ... imHo)

Here's one of mine that made POM

It was my second full day on Havelock, and I was strutting up the long beach that runs down the east coast of the island. I took this picture, then about 5 minutes later, ripped my foot open on a bit of coral lying on the beach. Ran up the beach with a trail of blood behind me and found a guest house where some other travellers helped me out and took me back to my place.

I spent the next week with my foot in a bandage, lying in my hammock as I couldn't go swimming or even walk anywhere. Obviously I was majorly pissed off to be in such a great place but unable to do anything, but I got over it! Eventually the bandage came off, and spent another week on Havelock catching up on all the stuff I'd missed out on.

Oh yeah, then I managed to lose all my Andaman's photos in Varanasi, except for 5 or 6 that I had mailed home first - this is one of them.
