India Phone Lines for Computers

Hello All I visited India last year for two months. I stayed in McLeod Ganj, which I loved!!!! I am planning on moving there this October (maybe moving on to Dalohousie. I know I will need an electrical adaptor for my computer but what about the phone line?

I suppose you are asking about the modem cable? You can buy one here to fit a phone line. The connection on the computer is standard worldwide, so you just need a new cable.

They have an adapter plug from the standard phone cable to their telephone plug for a few $$ much like you can get in any electrical electronic or hardware store.

Best thing to do would be to not bother using the land line and use your cell phone connection. Dial up in India sucks big time.

you could get yourself a Reliance mobile phone and a connection to R. World through them. Its not the cheapest method but is certainly convenient! If you get a post paid connection, internet charges are .30 paise a min..pre paid comes in a 0ne rupee...

I'm going to try Reliance with a portable phone. Anyone know if the speeds are as claimed, 50 to 144 kbps? Platinum(unlimited)Plan is 1500 per month.

Actual speeds on Reliance R-Connect average 26kbps.

The problem I have is that I lose the connection every few seconds, so it tales an age to receive and email.

Also, I cannot upload anything. If I try and send an attachment, even as small as 24k, I get cut off.

Also, I cannot FTP or do file trtansfers on MSN.

I am on pre-pay and it costs Rs.30/- and hour peak rate and half that off peak.

You have to buy a RIM phone and data cable (RS232 and USB are available). The cheapest I saw were Rs.3000/- for the phone and Rs.1400/- for the USB data cable.

RIM phones have a built-in sim card so you can't swap it over!

If anyone knows of a tweak so I don't get cut off all the time and can send attachments please let me know!

I am using XP Pro with the LG RD2230

I have 5 bars signal strength.

The RIM helpline doesn't - they just say they'll call me back and they never have.

Try here for any problems you might get. http://www.pcpitstop.com/
You can also run a check on your machine's set up including speed tests.
All free help.
