When its time to get snaps of some people(me included ), the subject freezes with limbs hanging stiffly and with facial expression somewhat between constipaded to Monalisa. But very rarely you will get an adult grinning ear to ear in a photo.

you get up at 3 in the morning and then stay up till 11am with nothing to eat. and with smoke and heat of the marriage fire, with the garland itching your neck, with a full bladder. Followed by a late lunch and diving at about 60 times at various people's feet....

yeah, you'll smile. The manic grin of the texas chainsaw murderer or in your case (UK), the quiet serious smile of Dr. Shipman.

Nowadays, its the video film maker who takes on the role of 'director' of the whole wedding show. Even action replays and retakes are sometimes required during the most crucial rituals, such as when the bride garlands the groom !

They all look like criminals in their "birthday greetings" photos in the newspaper here.

I was told it was because 'nice' girls were not to supposed to smile at their wedding --- but DD's explanation makes more sense!

I told my friends how much I'd enjoyed their wedding. They said, 'we didn't: it is so boring to be sat there hour after hour...'.

I've been to an Indian wedding, and let me say that, I know how statues now feel like. That's what the bride and groom were like, they sat there on their throne, while a line of relatives and guests were inching towards them in an opportunity to get their photo taken. They just stared through the lens. The bride/groom and the guests in the frame. Ohhhh one of those things.

Probably true for adult Indians, but Indian children seem to always be happy and smiling.....even when they have nothing, nothing (no toys, books, shoes, tattered apparel,....well you know what I mean...)....but you cant get rid of that smile, always wearing a smile....

the kids are something else........

One of the guys at my wedding had only one job.. to ensure an adequate supply of rum found its way into my coke.

At least I am smiling in the photographs.

I went to my first indian wedding with a parsi friend of mine from Dehli. After the photo was taken of us giving her a present, the bride said "you can go back to your seat now." When I asked why no-one smiled in photos, she said they probably wanted it to look like an arranged marriage, even though it was for love.
She said it was the only way to keep the nosey relatives off her back. for years to come.
Is this true?. I don't know, It's a cultural thing.
