Film

Hey I'm going to post this here as there hasnt been discussion in the photo setion since july...

I was just wondering about the availability of professional film. Like Fuji Reala, that has been kept in a fridge. I know film is becoming increasingly difficult to get, so I'm just curious. Also if anyone knows about approximate cost that be great too.

I'm also still slightly confused about the effect of airport scanners on film. Is this actually an issue, how can I protect the film?

Thanks!

For professional work you should have hand examination. Arrive early as they like to play a delay game and watch you sweat till you give in to X ray..

Can't make any suggestions for film in India, how about stocking up during a stopover on the way?

In 2005 when I flew to India from Vancouver there were half a dozen x-ray inspections each way..
It's getting crazy, the FEAR merchants have been busy. Seems that you often get stuff zapped entering the airport then again at boarding. My flight stopped in Korea for an hour and everyone was ordered off for yet another x-raying of their belongings. I thought x-raying peoples baggage from arriving flights at Chennai was going a bit far. Suspect they were looking for smuggled consumer goods entering India, not weapons that had been missed at all the other screenings.

Have heard that it takes in excess of five zaps to degrade image quality, but don't have any hard data. Faster film is damaged first so if you are into 1600+ asa beware. Have also heard that having some of the high speed stuff is a good way to justify asking for a hand inspection. The trouble is that x-ray fogging of film is cumulative, something security people don't seem to understand. Have been talking about carry on baggage only, if checked baggage is x-rayed have heard rumors that it is at a very high dose and sure to cause fogging.

In the past I've not needed anything faster than Tri-X but would want to process this myself back in Canada. If a high quality lab that did professional quality C41 processing could be located it might be an idea to develop film in India. In fact have been thinking of posting this as a question myself. Lately I've been experimenting with some of the C41 processed B&W film with this in mind.

Here's a couple URLs that might help..

What I have read in the past is that film can withstand the handbaggage scanner, but not the checked-in luggage scanner. Maybe they have different intensities...

India seems to have huge stocks of Kodak and Konica print film but not much else (a bit like my local high-street!) so it might be best to take what you need and yes, take it as carry-on luggage with an x-ray proof bag for any fast film (which they might check by hand after the scanner). Should all be OK.

apparently the problem with those x-ray proof bags is that they just turn the power up REALLY high on them and the same amount of damage is done. My boyfriend and i are trying to bring about 30 rolls of kodachrome into india, which means a looong time hand checking. and they always give you a hard time about it too.

Film? Oh yes, I remember as a small child pulling it out of daddy's camera. Do not buy film in India, nor get it developed there. Trust me on this.
