Hi Leah,
I usually use 400 ISO print and transparency film too and loads of it!!! I end up spending about half the cost of my trip on films, developing, printing and finally scanning too!!! I usually get it done once I am back in Mumbai and it costs much less out here as I live here too. Very cheap to buy the film in Mumbai as well as processing it here too. The scanning is also possible at pretty cheap rates even for a high resolution scan like 300 dpi for about Rs100 per roll when you give it at the same time for processing. You can usually get the CD's sent home after you process the film just in case you don't want to risk losing it due to theft or misplacing it during your travels. The weight of the films is a slight problem when you are backpacking but then there are always some disadvantages when you are travelling light. I hope you don't send the film before you develop it as it could get lost and you will never know even how your pictures came out on your film. Post is not so reliable in India and things can get lost sometimes so I would not recommend you post it under any circumstances unless you have at least made a digitally scanned copy on CD. Hope this helps and will be nice to see your pictures once you are here too. I too use a conventional SLR camera (Nikon F65D and Pentax MZ-5) and I also know how it feels carrying the heavy loads after the processing is done!!! Cheers, Aadil.

Tough call between the love of your dear old Nikon, and your familiarity with it, and the more appropriate technology for carrying 100s of pics with minimal weight and bulk.
Others probably have experience, but I'd worry about sending undeveloped film home ---and errant x-ray machine or inquisative customs man?
