Canon Vs Nikon
i got my first DSLR about 6 years ago. For me, I went with the Nikon D50 over a canon due to ergonomics, but that was what felt better for me.
Since then, Nikon's grips, especially on lower camera models, have changed for the worse, IMHO. I currently have a D7000 (Nikon) and I am very happy with it, but I would also have been happy with a Canon.

Guilty, me too. When I first got my SLR (Non Digital) over a decade ago the initial use was as a P&S. It took less than a week to change away from that P & S use though.
To the OP: A DSLR is a significant investment not just in money, but will also require significant investment of time/effort/learning/experimentation to get good results. The DSLR's of today are a significant improvement over the film ones in that it doesn't cost much to process the photos once taken when compared to a Film based SLR which I still own. With Film, you need to spend money and get the film processed and printed to even see the result of your effort.
Buy a D 90 and be happy
IT is retailing for around 44-48K online/offline(Delhi) for the moment, given it has been long discontinued.
hey randomized,
even i am aspiring to buy a DSLR..and have zeroed in on D7000 for the time being.I have been using a Nikon P&S P90 so will be staying loyal with Nikon.
and as regards to focusing, even I was damn confused. So I have been doing some Manual Focusing through my P90 and got a partial understanding of the thing. There are many articles which I went through to understand the whole process, but its only after owning one DSLR that I hope that the practical learning will begin.
Happy clicking. And wish me the same!
