I am not a photographer! (though often I wish I was one and capable of using all those features ...but thats a different dream!).

I am basically, a traveller and a trekker! I need a good camera, very light, fitting into a belt-pouch, that I can whip out in 5 seconds, click a pic in Auto Mode and review it on display in 5 secs and if OK, put it back in my pouch, in next 5 secs. The camera's Auto-Mode feature must be very good, so clever and fast that it decides in those 5 secs how to capture a great picture; usually a panoramic mountain view or a closer 10-feet group of people. (sometimes, I need a closeup of flowers, for that I know enough to get into a Macro mode!).

My end-objective is: To get a Picture in my Auto Mode, as good as possible (if not better) than a moderately capable semi-professional photographer with all his manual adjustments and tripod etc.

My SD-630 does all of this .... but its 3x zoom is not enough if I am zooming onto a peak or a monkey on the tree. A 12x zoom and IS feature on my SD-630 would have made it perfect!

If you understood my requirements and can think of something better than the SD-630 .... now or later when it becomes available .. do let me know. Thanks again.

Panasonic TZ1 is the right cam for u, its small, easy to fit, good auto focus and has 10x of optical zoom in small body with IS...........
Panasonic has even come out with TZ3, which is better in terms of feature as comapred to TZ1 (same body shape) but TZ1 at JJmehta is being retailed at 11k which is dirt cheap coampred to indian standards.......so go for it

Merchant... New York's definition of grey may well be different to India's.

My camera probably came in someone's suitcase from somewhere where they are much cheaper. In a sense it is a lot closer to being second-hand, even if never-used.

This is the sort of thing we call grey-market. It certainly never had duty paid on it, and may well not carry any sales tax.

You might say this should be called 'black' market. Maybe 'grey', here, is a euphemism!

However, it may still come from a 'regular' shop who may well give you their own guarantee.

No, I'm telling you how the word is used on the streets of Chennai.

Wikkipedia mention that?

As I just typed in another post, about UK, USA and India: three countries divided by a common language!

OK... I'd expect the definition to be closer from one Indian city to another, as opposed to accross an ocean or two. But...

the Delhi-ites will have to tell us.

Question diff btwn S3 and S2

Apologies in advance for not reading the entire thread, please indulge me on this...

People, what is the essential difference between the S3 and S2 in the Canon IS series? I read here that the colour of S3 is black... that's just a cosmetic difference.

The question is relevant coz the S2 IS must be costing 7000 to 8000 rupees in the "grey" market [patent pending definition of the term "grey"] as its an old model. If i were to pay 6000 extra for the S3, what exactly am i getting? [then i will ask myself, "do i want it?"}

The opening paragraph of this page give some idea of the differences.

It was 5 Megapixel, is now 6; I'm surprised they didn't make it more!

I know the differences are not enough to make me covet an upgrade. Any further camera spending for me in the future would either be on a shirt-pocket carry-anywhere-all-the-time, or on a much more serious SLR. The latter, particularly would mean a windfall and I'm not expecting one...

Actually, next item on my photography budget is a decent tripod, and it seems it might have to cost as much as the grey S3's that have been mentioned.

I looked at an affordable tripod. Gave it a push and a shove, and it rocked and shook.

It is amazing that people sometimes assume that my wife doesn't speak Tamil! "But he's trying to make it move" the shop people complained to each other.

Indeed I was; just as Aadil recommended I should, when I enquired on IM.

well..for me and people i know in Delhi refer to things that come in without tax and duty paid ...as grey products..

they come without packing, and simply 'laminated' byt the vendor. Sometimes they also get the boxes printed. they are sold without a bill of purchase and generally only carry Testing warranty (3-10 days)..

there are stores which will sell you the regular as well as grey stuff..they simply give you a bill for regular and they dont show grey in their records..

Thanks Nick

You have answered my question.

The S2 IS was available at Rs 18000 grey in June 2006. Today it should be 50 per cent less.

Someone like me will not need the extra ISO for night shooting that the S3 offers... or the extra movie features...

The only reason to buy it is.... 13 K to 14 K [not a bad price, really] but somehow, i prefer the silver colour over the black.

Lets see what transpires.... Thanks again Nick!!

Must side with Merchant here . . . products which have not had import duty applied are SMUGGLED.
Canon's Indian importer would refer to any Canon camera for sale in India which had not come from them as GREY.
The importer will apply local discounting restrictions on the dealerships, you know the ads that say 'ring for price' - this means they are not allowed to advertise below a certain price. The importer also only honours warrantys on cameras that have been smuggled, sorry supplied by them.
All SMUGGLED cameras are of course GREY.
Not all GREY cameras are SMUGGLED.
A camera without a warranty can often (after time) be referred to as a DOOR-STOP (or for smaller P&S cameras - a PAPER-WEIGHT).

Well, that's a heap more terminology for us to get our heads around! But do remember that Indian usage is not necessarily the same as Indian.

I can say that I am very happy with my paperweight!

One day, I might upgrade to a doorstop

Guys 5S IS is out .. see here http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ead =23273592 .. but dont know about how it will be as no comprehensive review is not available .. will be out in market some time in July.

In India, Bangalore I went to GV Vale to enquire about the prices of s3IS .. and they told me a whopping 27000 Buks .. i told them it is available in US for 300 $ .. then why it costing so much in India .. from a genuine dealer. But they had no answers. I dont know whether the Duty on exported cameras is so high or what.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ead =23532215

To buy S5 or S3 .. its a matter of your judgement and affordability .. and whether you are willing to wait for few extra months.

Guys ... has anyone used Fuji 6000/6500 fd. I have researched that it is the best zoom lens (10.7 x), wide angle, low light camera available in the market .. I thought of buying an S3 IS .. but then .. i find fuji 6000 better .. (of course my views)

Thanks for that info.

slightly more craving to upgrade.

I notice small things like the Menu button now seems to be recessed. I bought the S2 because, in picking-it-up tests it seemed the design fitted my hand better than anything else I tried. Only snag, in practice, is I do sometimes push the menu button accidentally.

The bigger LCD screen would be an improvement. I have a requirement for a camera with a viewfinder, because I cannot use the LCD without getting the reading glasses out. One day they'll get big enough and I will be able to. I might need a truck to carry that camera, though !
