Camera safety
I hope this is the right thread for this question.
My first trip to India starts next month in Delhi. I'll be travelling a little bit, with my friend who lives there, to Agra, Amritsar, Dharamsala and environs. I'm bringing a brand new (insured) digital SLR I'm very fond of, and I plan on taking as many pictures as I can. I've read that I shouldn't walk around with a camera around my neck. Since this is not a small camera, I just can't stow it in a shirt pocket and easily whip it out. I understand the importance of being secure with my belongings, but what's the best way to have acess to my digital SLR camera without making it a target or risking unwanted attention? Do I have to hide it in my back pack the whole time and discreetly unpack it every time I want to take a picture? Or am I making a big deal out of nothing? Any advice on this is appreciated. |

I'd say
just wear it. I've carried cameras of various sizes (and numbers, I sometimes wear two, one loaded with black and white, the other with color). You've got it to take pictures; make it handy.

India is safer that way, you need not worry about mugging etc. People are gentle. Just take normal precautions like do not leave it unattended

my friend had her arm ripped off by 2 guys on a bike who snatched her bag as they went by in delhi's connaught place. luckily for me... her arm grew back
![]() keep a firm hand on it but... remember not to hold it so tight that you've already lost it. i wouldn't worry about it. non tourist areas should be safer. |

I got back from India last week after being there for a month. I felt safer there than in some parts of my home town. Wear your camera, you'll be fine. Take lots of pics and don't forget to post some here for us to look at.

OK, I feel better already. Thanks for the tips; the camera, Nikon D50, takes such great pictures, it would be a crime to leave it home.
Just reading the messages on this site from all of these experienced India travellers has greatly reduced any anxiety I've had about going to India. I've been to Europe a few times, but this'll be my first time away from the western environment I'm so accustomed to. I think the hardest part of the trip will be the long trip in the pressurized vessel known as an airliner. Yuck! |

Your camera will be fine around your neck, and people will expect you to photograph them. You'll get plenty of attention, mostly people asking you to shoot them.

We have just returned from a long trip all around India and carried a video camera and a very large expensive digital SLR everywhere. There were no problems and we never felt threatened or not safe. Just use common sense; keep the strap around your neck and do not leave it lying around.
The SLR drew a lot of admiring glances and many people asked us to photograph them and wanted to see their photo on the screen but it was a delight to do and caused no problems. Jenny and Ernie

Gator, you're probably more safer in India than in the streets of NY . Let me assure you that your concerns are , no offence meant, totally misplaced. So relax and come and enjoy this incredible land
