what is your budget? if you can afford it - go for a prosumer model, they have more versatility than the average point and shoot models (and much better lenses and optical zoom), of course they are bulkier - but in the long run, more useful.

do check the website recommended by Wanderer22, it's the best.

have fun!

if you can afford that much you can get the following:

Sony DSC H-20
10 Megapixel
10 x optical zoom
excellent lens
HD shooting capability
Lithium-Ion battery
free 2 GB memory stick and 3 year warranty from SONY India (price Rs. 17990).

Fuji Finepix S2000HD
10 Megapixel
14.7 x optical zoom
HD shooting capability
2 year warranty from Fuji India (price Rs. 13990).

Canon powershot SX 110IS
9 megapixels
10 x optical zoom
Nickel-MetalHydride battery
Rs. 14995 from www.jjmehta.comwith free 2 GB card batteries/pouch and most importantly 2 years warranty from Canon India.

Kodak ZD710
7.2 Megapixels
15 x optical zoom
Lithium-Ion battery
price online with free shipping - Rs. 9455 (a great camera at a really low price - though not high on the megapixels).
http://www.infibeam.com/SDP.action?c...-C-Kodak-ZD710

Nikon L100
10 Megapixels
15 x optical zoom
Nickel-MetalHydride battery
price Rs. 18081 with free shipping on the same site as above.

do also consider the P80 (on your original list) @ 15865 and the far cheaper P60 for 7450 (8 mp, 5 x optical zoom and compact size).

a wide range of models are available in the grey/black market for less - but be wary, you will not get any warranties or after sales service.

if you can afford it get a zoom camera like one of the prosumer models it will be well worth the extra effort and cost (you could get the Kodak model which is really cheap, or if you want to play it safe Sony is great, while Fuji is very good value for money too - both these models have High Definition shooting for film and video).

if you live in Mumbai, i highly recommend a visit to JJ Mehta on Chhabil Das road, Dadar (W)

do make sure to get yourself atleast a 4 GB memory stick (for Sony) or 4 GB SD card for the other models - the cheapest place beyond any doubt is online at www.indiatimes.com, i am yet to find a cheaper and more dependable source.

camera pouches cost very little (150-200 for this size camera) on the roadside market. but if you want a fancier one - try case logic or sony which will cost you around 750 Rs.

i hope you found this information useful - goodluck and have fun!

a compact camera

Hi
Please go for Canon SX 200IS model, a 12 MP, 28 to 336 zoom pocketable camera with Manual Mode and, Aperture priority, Shutter Priority too. A very good model another one is Canon SX 10 IS, a small camera with 28 to 560 zoom, suitable for travel photography.

Thanks
alok

I have a Canon SD1100IS (latest version is SD1200) and it is has been well reviewd and selling very well for years in the USA. It costs about Rs 10,000 equivalent in the USA and I guess it costs less than Rs 20,000 in India.

Its main advantage is ability to take excellent pictures while being extremely compact (fits in any shirt/pant pocket). Unless you are an advanced amateur or professional photographer this should suffice.

Panasonic has been making some cameras as are many other manufacturers. Personally don't buy Nikon cameras because it is a part of Mitsubishi group.

I tend to Canon since it still has a viewfinder allowing more stable shots. The 780 supposedly has better low light capabilities. I have an ancient digital that has an excellent lens and very few MPXs. But, it frequently outperforms a 10er. After dizzying research on the sites including the one above it doesn't seem like one measure or camera suits all..

Has anyone used Kodaks Z980? I dont know which reviews to believe. Some say it is good value, better than Nikons P90, comparable with the latest Olympus prosumer, others say the image quality is not up to the mark. God knows what to believe. The price is approx. 20K.
