Camera and Admission Fee

Hi, I'm new here.

India Mike forums have been very helpful for me to prepare for my first trip to India very soon. I am going with a group of friends for leisure. We are going to Mumbai, Udaipur, Jaipur, Agra, Delhi, Goa, and Ahmedabad.

I plan to take a lot of digital photos during the trip. I read somewhere that some places charge extra admission fee if one is carrying a pro looking photo equipment. Would I get charged extra just for having a mid-sized DSLR (Canon 5D) with a zoom lens hanging around my neck? I may get a smaller DSLR (Canon XT) for this trip, I wonder if the color of the camera may make a difference? Silver versus "pro" black.

Thanks.

Camera

If you try to look like a typical tourist -- one camera hanging on your shoulder you should be OK. Many places charge extra any way for camera use.

I don't think they distinguish between a pro or amateur p&s camera. Many places charge extra for a camera regardless of calibre.

The only difference in camera fees I've ever seen is for video or still cameras. They charge you more for a video camera.

No, colour or size is not important, there is a fee for entering with a still camera. According to some signs, that even includes mobile phones with cameras, but somehow I don't think anyone is going to be checking phones!

At some sites e.g. the Taj Mahal tripods are not permitted, and as Hal says, at some there is a higher fee for video cameras.

I took a video camera into Khajuraho, was charged the same price as for a still camera.
