Black and White Film
Hi all
Does anybody know how easy it is to get Black and White 35mm film in India? I'm going to be in Delhi at the start of my trip, so I guess you must be able to find it there. Can you get it processed there or should I wait till I get back?(to the UK) Thanks very much |

It was very easy a decade ago. Now..
I took rolls of 35 (100 feet) and did my own packing with a device.. Last edited by machadinha : Jan 10th, 2008 at 01:53. Reason: merged posts |

Best to bring a good supply with you. Make sure to transport it in CARRY ON baggage, NOT CHECKED!
Stronger x-rays used on checked baggage is reported to fog film. The hand luggage scanners if used too many times on film can degrade quality. Have heard that for best results with higher speed films x-ray scans with low power units should not exceed five times. Once film is developed there is no problem from x-ray exposure so getting film souped in India may be an advantage. Recently I've been experimenting with B&W film that can be processed using C-41 colour chemicals. Quality C-41 processing seems to be available in larger Indian cities by firms using automated equipment. W22 |

I'm sure it gets discussed now & then. The only thread I find in a hurry though is 35mm Ilford black & white film , but you could search around some more.

35mm B&W is available almost every where and ofcourse in Delhi. Production units have been closed in India but a lot of Police&Forensic and also Medical Photography work is being done on B&W.

Karnail, "Production units have been closed in India" meaning it'd be very hard to find somewhere to develop true black and white film (Tri-X 400) in Delhi?
A mate and I are heading over in November. We're packing 50 rolls each and hoping it lasts. I'm very keen on the idea of trying to get my film developed before I leave. Does anyone here residing in Delhi shoot black and white film and get it developed there? Or have recently gotten it developed there on your travels? Cheers, Scott. |

Yes, developing is a problem. You may find some small labs doing the developing part but their quality may not up to the mark. And if you want "fine grain developing", probably none. A few individuals do this in their home-based facility. I know such a person in Kolkata but not in other cities. So, I think it would be better if you shoot here are develop at your homeplace.

Bhaswaran has suggested the right thing. It is not trustworthy here now as the new generation is not getting much exposure and practice in the intricacies of developing the films and may ruin your good work. I have seen that even the forensic work is in the hands of not so good.
