I want to buy a camera and my budget is 20K at max.
my main purpose is family photos and travel. i want to know the difference between point&shoot and prosumer cams in the sense that which one to buy becoz some of the point & shoot are costlier than good prosumers. eg: samsung NV24HD is costlier than nikon p80. Then which one to go. nyone please clear the doubt. |

I've been doing a bit of research on this. My choice would be the Nikon D40

Go for Canon-SX110 or SX100 Powershot. I ve used Nikon and Konica but i believe Canon is much better. I would strongly suggest SLR but with 20K budget i think Canon SX110 or SX100 is a good value for money.

Thanks for reply friends but my aim is not DSLR, as i am very new to photography and i think i cannot handle DSLR's. So my question is still unanswered i.e. difference between point&shoot and prosumer cams ?

I have tried a few. I might be able to sell my too expensive but immensely capable Canon D20 to my close-to-professional niece, for her using it as a backup for her current identical Canon and her Hasselblad.
Today (heavy disclaimer etc.) I'm looking at a Nikon L100. Nice specs, not too small as to getting lost in your hands but hopefully allowing a secure grip, and I really hope there's there is a see-through viewfinder, whatever that's called in current digital parlance. |

For most part there isn't much difference in point and shoot and prosumer cameras, apart from zoom range of the lens and manual controls (not even that if you are looking at SX110IS etc. from Canon).

In most DSLR you have the automatic or preselect options - if you are seriously interested in photography - it makes more sense to invest in a DSLR and then as time goes by you will get a hang of things.
Before buying my Nikon D80....I was using Sony DSC H2 enjoyed it and it gave me the flexibility to use filters with a Advanced P&S camera

Though it's a few Rs. above what you're looking to spend, I've been more than happy with my Canon G-10. As someone who carried multiple bodies and multiple lenses for over twenty years, I was looking for optical quality in a minimum size. Lens on the G-10 is roughly equivalent to (in 35mm) 28 to 150mm, and with 14mp, enlargements up to 16X20 are tack sharp.

If not interested in a DSLR, I would recommend you to take a look at Panasonic FZ28.. It is one of the best prosumer cameras.
