monkeys!
monkeys!
Hello, I'm searching for some statistics about number of people attacked by monkeys in India during last years. How often does it happen? What kind of injuries can the monkeys do to us, people? What sort of illnesses monkeys transport? How many things are being stolen nowadays by monkeys, etc. I would be very happy, if someone could give me such informations

I doubt that anyone would know that

All the time especially if they think/smell that you have food with you. Or they feel threatened or fear for their babies

Ha Ha!
It depends on the stupidity of people!
If you carry a bunch of carotts and throw one to a monkey, all the monkeys will want one and will attack you to steal the others you have.
I don't know the statistics, but I would guess that approximately 100% of people who come to the Nilgiris on a Filmy Chakkar will be attacked by monkeys.
This does not apply to other tourists.

I had a monkey jump on top of my head and try to steal my glasses in vrindavan.I also have a friend who did some work in south africa and was bit by this one monkey several times, and she is ok although she did have her rabie shots.
I was at one of those zoo thingies here in Bangalore, signs everywhere not to annoy or throw things at the animals.
We were at the Zebra enclosure where a family of wild monkeys were passing through it. A group of middle aged men started to taunt the monkeys and throw things through the net at them. Each trying to out do the others bravado.
I was just about to confront them to tell them to stop. When one of the bigger monkeys climbed the fence and sat looking down at them. The bravado left really quickly and 6 or 7 guys tripped over themselves trying to run off.
It was the funniest thing I had seen in a long time.

didn't get attacked, but i got stranded in a smelly bathroom-cum-toilet in varanasi when a troop of monkeys decided to party on the roof.
had to rely on a friend looking out a window (laughing of course) to let me know when they had gone

There needs to be a major cull in a few places. The monkey population has shot up in many areas. Just looking at Kasauli I have noticed more and more monkeys every time.
Check the story below. It makes interesting reading.

I too am afraid of monkeys. I think they bite really bad and could probably tear the skin off. Is that true? +what do animals know where to attach and where not to? ;-)

Don't tell anyone, but I bought a water pistol especially so that I could squirt the little buggers on the ghat roads up to Ooty.
It is hilarious!
No animals were harmed in the making of this post; objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are; your home is at risk if you do not keep up payments...

I am planning on trekking in Uttaranchal and walking about Matheran. Is a trekking pole/big stick/cricket bat a deterrent?
We were 'attacked' by a monkey in Hampi... It threw a coconut at us from a fair height, just missed both our heads.
Also when we were in Shimla I witnessed a few monkey thefts, ripping clothes from lines and one buger even ran off with a mirror.
