Women - vest tops?
Hi there -
In southern india, are vest tops completely out? I am talking about these sort of vests - http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/st...5325&langId=-1 - worn with a scarf draped around the neck. So you see, just something that would show a little bit of arm. I am just thinking of heat - I'm worried I will melt in a t-shirt! Thankyou |

It depends of the place you're going to wear it - at Kerala beaches it'll be absolutely OK :-) At cities and esp at rural villages I think you'll have a bit more attention than wearing something less revealing. But you'll have attention anyway - if you have a light skin. And I don't think wearing such tops is dangerous - esp in touristy places.
As for heat - it's much more comfortable wearing loose cotton shirt with sleeves in India. Oh... and in some temples in India temple stuff asked western tourists wearing revealing tops to drape the upper arms and chest with scarf or something - so it's a good thing to have a light big cotton scarf.

Sleeveless is not unknown here, especially among younger women. Short-sleeved is fine: sari blouses are short-sleaved; there is no taboo about "a little bit of arm"!

T-shirt fabric, which is what it looks as if that topshop clothing is made from is actually relatively thick and gets pretty heavy and sweat soaked, because it's of knitted cotton.

I agree with Haylo. A `cotton short kurta(or even a thin loose t-shirt) will be cooler than a tight fitting vest.

I must confess that the subject title "Women - vest tops?" excited me in....err....a rather ungentlemanly fashion...then I clicked the link and saw the vest tops...they look really cute - wish I had a little daughter who would toddle around with me in them.
Btw, I agree with Haylo, Nayan and Federica - sounds logical and, well, they would obviously know better then me ! |

Yes, covering up is the way to go. Something that will give you good air circulation.
Men wear the Kurta, they are great, and you can hide a multiple of sins, like my blubber. ![]()
