I'm glad to see this thread has moved onto to more positive grounds. Count me in for the Bangalore wild rice party!

Wild rice is a species of grass. In the UK I used to buy brown basmati rice. Nutty flavour.

Here (reference: Mrs N) Basmati is only used for Biryani. It is very expensive compared to other rice.

I use it for everything, it has some flavour at least, but Mrs N forbids me from feeding it to the birds!

Oh, that Ludberg site makes me sad... Here I am in a major rice-growing country, at least ten varieties/grades available even in the local rice shop, and nothing that can make me say, Mmmm... delicious

Can you imagine the Indian customs allowing shipments of rice into India?

Anyway, I didn't check the prices on the site, but remember we're living on an Indian budget here --- I'd guess that even the shipping charges would be extortionate in our terms.

We used to buy cheap rice (broken grains) for our crows in the old house, but Mrs N would eat it too (not much wrong with it, to be honest) if she was just cooking for herself, so it became known as wife-and-crow rice!

Here we don't have a flock of crows, but we do have a flock of sparrows. At least we don't have to make them egg to go with the rice every day.

Well, yes. India imported a lot of US-AID rice in the early 70s.

Dont be surprised if they do. Many rice farmers are switching to sugarcane, banana etc for higher profits.

I also heard on tv some African farmers are cultivating Pigeon peas and exporting to India.

What is Pigeon peas?

Everywhere here is being planted with rice this year, whereas previously fields were left barren. I presumed the price had risen.

By the way, is David's rice ready yet?

I was told that basmati rice is hard to digest hence it was made only on special occasion, but now I think it had more to do with the price.
I am sure there are other reasons why basmati rice is not used for everyday cooking.

You never know what threads are going to stick around here. Don,t try to figure it out because there's no logic to it.
I have asked serious questions, only to get a couple of responses (helpful nonetheless), and on the other hand i once started a thread observing the new design of the website, and got 77 responses!

Looks like a Bangalore meetup is in order! It might be a bit early to plan at this point, but I will be in India from October to March. I was planning on heading south around December or January and honestly I wouldn't mind carrying around a pound of rice for a few months. That is assuming there are no customs restrictions for bringing rice into the country.

We can always start a new thread about getting wild rice into India and another one on how best to cook it unless you already know. If it's going to be a hassle lugging around a bag of rice then please don't get it. Honest I won't mind. However let's definitely meet up when you are in Bangalore.
