Question Where to get GOOD Sleeping bags / High Altitude Tents

Hi All,

This is my first post on this forum. I've gone thru the various posts and yet could not find out a conclusive reply.

I am from Ahmedabad, Gujarat and am planning a bike ride to Ladakh this May - July with a couple of friends.

While, most of the basics have been organised, I am not able to locate a good source for the 2 most imp things for my trip :

A good sleeping bag &
A good tent

I'll be going to Delhi and if there is some really great place to get my stuff then do let me know.

Also, I've heard that in Dehradoon, there are some places where you can get the stuff used by the Army at places like Siachen etc ( basically High Alti and hence good quality )

any members would like to throw some light on this....???

thanks in advance.

Hi Jay_J

At Delhi you can find Stikage, Adventure 18
you can check out

www.stikage.com
Adventure 18, Satya Niketan Market, New Delhi (phone: 011-30970400)

As for me Stikage provides good VFM stuffs, though may people in this forum swear at them. Personally, my experiance with Stikage has been good so far.

Use your head and select which one suits you fine.

Anindya

Good slleping Bags and Tent.

Dear,

Instead of buying a good gear ( Which is almost immpossible to get in India at reasonable price ) you can hire the same from Indian Mountaineering Foundation in Delhi. You will have to deposit the cost as refundable amount and just pay the reasonable fare for quality gear. just follow the link.

I've seen the Indian Army sleeping bags and they are great gear. If you can get one of those for reasonable cost, you can go anywhere cold. 1000 down and very well made indeed. Lots of the porters in Sikkim had them.

Those High altitude bags from stikage look OK, would have to try them out where it mattered before I swore by them.

Hi Anindya, Sunray & Vippy,

Thanks for the inputs...

Am searching out for the stuff available from the Army, anybody here who can help me out on that...???

Vippy : Am planning on buying them only as i keep on travelling and getting em once and for all for myself would be fine. If u have any places in Delhi, do let me know.

Need the good stuff as am going to be travelling on my bike and plan to cover some really remote regions. Let's see how the plans turn out...

Guys ! In my opinion - STIKAGE is no good. You can fnd good gear from BANGLORE and MUMBAI. Do some googling and I am sure you will be coming to it. And above all...if you still try something like STICKAGE-please do post your experience with us. As for I have seen-STIKAGE has very inferior quality of sleepings bags and rucksacks. I saw what they sent as samples to DMAS and it was real CRAP. I am sorry-if I am harsh....

I used to have this German Army WW2-era mummy sleeping bag with arms to put through and kept you warm even if the temperatures got to -10. But I'm sure these days there are much better ones... and less heavy. (Now this post doesn't help anybody, just me going on about nothing)

Sleeping bags

hi , , one will never find quality ''adventure gear '' in India . I paid Rs2000 for a very compact sleeping bag in Banglore but the temperature rating is 16 C..which is okay for the plains ..if you want to shop for sleeping bags
try ordering it from the Himalyan Club in Mumbai..

Thumbs up Himalayan Club in Mumbai

Am a member of the Himalayan Club. Them selling stuff is news to me. Sometime ago they had ordered stuff from abroad via the IMF and many of us were able to buy stuff at wholesale rates. That was just once.

Avi Industries in Mumbai is good for stuff. They currently have sleeping bags made in Europe.
