what to wear, what to wear

Leave on Sunday for Delhi. Everything sorted but am concerned that I haven’t managed to find long sleeved shirts that are lightweight enough to wear. I am taking long cotton trousers and tshirts. Is that going to be ok for my first three days in Delhi before I manage to buy something more suitable in India?

Finding "summer" clothes in the UK in the middle of winter is proving a bit of a problem

It's winter in Delhi right now and it was cold and foggy when I was there a few weeks ago... make sure you have something warm to wear.

Agree with Maree..last year I was in Delhi this time and froze my butt off! Bring layers so you can add and remove easily. Ask for extra blankets at hotels..I always used them! Next time I'm going in summer to experience the opposite!

I like thermal underwear....its really thin so packs down small and keeps you nice and toasty and it dries quicky...only downside is if you happen to pull in it wearing your superman boys underpants!! Bit of a passion killer.

Surely the daytime temps are in the low 20sC (70sF)? Be like summer compared to the UK. Try http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/INXX0038.html

Today certainly doesn't feel like summer in Delhi. Grey sky and rather cold. Outside this morning I was wearing jeans, tennis, long sleeved shirt, leather jacket, and shawl. And it gets colder early in the evening. And it's often worse inside where there is no heating.
You can get a warm shawl for 150rs in Delhi... useful.

If the weather's sunny - yes temps would be in the low 20'sC (70F+) during the height of the day but if it's smoggy (as it often is in winter) then it can be pretty cold even for a Brit. Whether smoggy or not, nights are pretty cool at this time of year.

These smogs have become much more frequent in the last 20-30 years and some weather experts put it down to increased pollution (industrial, vehicle and domestic) combined with more moisture in the air from the intensely irrigated cultivation across the Ganges plain.

I was in Delhi 10 days ago; temps ranged from 4C/40F to 17C/62F. It wasn't too bad, walking around in the daytime. Nights were foggy enough that many flights were cancelled or delayed, and trains were late all across Northern India.

However, the hotel had no heat, and even beneath two heavy blankets, I couldn't get warm enough to sleep. Those thermal undies would have helped a great deal!

You'll find all kinds of lightweight long sleeved shirts there, don't worry about it.

Today its cloudy and bit windy..but the night temp is rising and last nite it was around 8C.
You can buy both light winter and cool cotton summer clothings from Janpath or Sarojini Nagar market in Delhi.

Thanks everyone. I have packed the thermals and also a light weight fleece and another light weight zip up top.

I can always wear them at the same time if I get too cold and will wait till I am there to buy any "summer" type top.

Thanks again
