What to wear?
Hi
I am sure this has been done before getting a bit confused!! Me and my husband are thinking about going to India for a holiday in March we are only going to be able to go for a couple of weeks and have found a tour that we are thinking of doing which includes the following places Delhi Jaipur Ranthambore Nawalgarh Galta Bharatpur Fatehpur Sikri Agra Orchha Khajuraho Varanasi Sarnath It is alot to fit in to the time we have so we do not have much time in each place to go shopping etc. So not sure if and when I will be able to buy clothes there. I really need to know what sort of clothes to take. I am not worried about people looking at me as I understand they will do that whatever I wear but I do not want to offend anyone. Is it ok to wear 3/4 length trousers? I may have a bit of time on my first day in Delhi so do you have any recommendations for somewhere I can get some clothes from? Thanks for your help |

want2travel, welcome to indiamike.
You won't be needing many (any? after UK) warm clothes in those places in March. Will leave the questions of what kind of clothes to the experts ![]() as for Delhi shopping, if you indicate which area you are staying in people will be able to help better. And, just to get you started, if you scroll down, you see many threads titled 'what to wear' under similar threads. In fact, some are titled 'what to wear what to wear' ![]() |

Rest Assured...
3/4th length trousers wouldn't offend any sensitivities whatsoever... March can get to be quite hot in all the places you intend travelling to... And you could even consider reducing the length a vee bit further, if that makes you more comfy... As long as you don't convert them to shorts, that is... Rest assured, Indian sensitivities are not easily offended... Cheers...! |

People wear all kinds of things, but here's a few thoughts about what might be most comfortable (and will probably reduce staring)
1) Anything below the knee is fine. Ankle length is typical but not mandatory. The real erogenous zone to watch is tight pants around the pelvis/butt region. You can avoid this by wearing a shirt that isn't tight fitting and hits midthigh. Arms don't seem to matter much either way, but few tops in North India seem to be totally sleeveless. Cap sleeves seem to be the norm, at least in Delhi. 2) Cotton, woven not knit. It'll dry faster. It won't stretch while on the clothesline (dryers are non-existent). It's comfortable. 3) Long scarves are helpful, for keeping dust out of your face and for times when you want to drop in on religious sites. They also offer a touch of anonymity if you get tired of standing out. 4) Jewelry. Don't bring anything that would break your heart if you lost it, but jewelry is a big status symbol in India. Most women (even the poorest) wear as much as they can afford as kind of a portable savings account. So, don't be afraid to wear it. Won't make you look like a floozy but quite the opposite. You can buy all this stuff in India. One easy place to start is FabIndia. It's not cheap and the quality varies, but everything's fixed price and the service is good. Very easy when jetlagged. Good luck, and have fun! |

Cotton lightweights for everyone. Travel light and buy there, if you're normal sizes you should be able to get slacks/shirts for men and Salwar/Kamese for the ladies at very low cost. Or wear the unisex 'experienced European traveller in India outfit' of lightweight cotton jeans and a kurta on top with a shoulder/messenger bag. Khadhi Bhandar have a place in Delhi for selling 'ethical' hand woven clothes that are very nice indeed and also reasonably cheap. Not sure where it is though, and a Google search gives two addresses, although this being India they're probably the same place and someone has changed the street name... Anyway, do what everyone else does, get in a cab and say 'Khadhi Bhandar please'... |
