Bring lots of shoes, the undies and bras that you prefer, and if you have some favorite clothes, you might bring them for a tailor to copy.You won't have trouble buying size 10 salwar kameez or kurtas off the rack.

thank you for the advice! This thread has helped with our packing and overweight luggage issues!

Hi- I'm new :-) and I'm going to India for the first time next week. I've gotten so much good advice from this forum! Can someone answer my clothes question?
I've got a long sleeved white cotton shirt, cotton baggy pants, sneakers, flip-flops and a 100% Polyester ankle length skirt. I've read over and over that cotton is the way to go, but this skirt feels like silk, won't wrinkle and is super light. Is it a mistake? I'm spending a month in Northern India- Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Rajasthan.

Sounds fine to me, Ocean

can you buy them all over...I realise these are traditional wear for the ladies but I wasn't sure if you could pick them up at a market as well .
If you do buy them off the rack , what sort of price are they ?

I've seen them in shops on Janpath in Delhi (big touristy market) and in shops at the New Market in Kolkata. The state emporiums, also have both ready-to-wear and the cloth pieces you can take to a tailor for stitching. Daal Face thanks for the report...One question - how about what to wear in Summer time..we'll be in Goa, Kerala, Karnataka in March, April...then up in Himachal Pradesh, end of April and Uttrakhand in May.
Wondering if we should bring long pants or just shorts...if at nights times it gets cold etc.

Well summer in all those places you mentioned (south india) is going to be hot & hotter. Uttarkhand HP is going to be between warm & hot in April May. Essential wear would be T-shirts & Shorts (bermudas) or long pants when not near beaches (less likely to get gawked at
)
) Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to post their thoughts on this topic! I will be spending the rest of this evening repacking. I'm off to Kerala with my boyfriend this Friday for 3 weeks, it will be our first time in India, can't wait!
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a SK. I'm heavily tattooed and like to keep covered up even in London (except for a special night out) as I get fed up with people staring and asking questions. In Thailand we found the locals were very friendly towards us because of our tattoos (and big smiles!), SK's sound great as I'll be able to cover a lot of my tattoos up and protect them from the sun, perfect!
Thanks again!

It has come to this. I need to ask a question. This is my ninth or tenth trip in the last many years and I still hate packing. Does this seem too much or not enough: two cotton SK, two pair of linen pants and 4 cotten kurtas, 1 pr.lace up shoes and 1 pr. sandals, wool shawl, hat. I will be in TN (Chennai, Madurai and Ooty) and Rajasthan(all over), MP(Indore, Bhopal, Mandu, Gwalior, etc) and Delhi for two months beginning 21 January. Suggestions? I am 6'1"; buying clothes is not always easy. Everything seemed so much easier in my long gone hippy days. Thanks everybody!

Sounds more than enough to me. You are going to be in warm places, down on the plains in TN and MP, cooler up in the hills. Rajasthan will be warm after mid-Feb. Prior to that, Jan and early Feb, cooler conditions.
Every cloud has a silver lining!
