What NOT to before leaving

Well I got a surprise when I went to go buy our luggage, I was showing my son at the bank how to make a deposit and forgot to take my ATM card out of the machine which ate it. Maybe I might be able to get it back Tuesday if I am at the bank when they open or it will be 2-3 business days, but of course I will be in India.Could be a Fun trip with no money, I have a free breakfast and a bottle of water paid by the tour. Thank goodness everything else is paid for, rooms at both hotels, transportation to and from air port and hotels. But that is it could be a trip to remember.

In theory everything shout be OK, but banks are closed until Tuesday and we leave early Wednesday afternoon, lots of things to do and pack after I get my card, it is not destroyed until 24 hours the following business day. I went on a Saturday when the bank was closed, so 24 hours later is Wednesday afternoon. I called head branch and talked to a manager, but I will be chewing my fingernails off until then.
wish me luck, gregor

Oh, ye gods! What a thing to happen!

Hope you have a second card (debit or credit) as relying on just one can be risky anyway. Otherwise, back to cash/travellers' cheques?

I locked myself out of my internet banking (yes, my fault for getting the password wrong) just when I'd sold my house and was coming back here last year. This resulted in all sorts of problems as I didn't have a 'permanent address' for my last few weeks in UK, and the bank totally screwed up with the bits of paper they insisted on getting physically signed by me to let me back in again. What seemed like a minor problem with plenty of time to get solved turned into an urgent last minute issue, with me having to promise faithfully that I would end my 30-year relationship with the bank if they did not get it sorted that very day. They did.

Hope it works out...

If your card was old it may have not worked anyway. We had a heck of a time getting our credit cards to work in India, although they work ok here in the US. Seems their machines are not as sensitive and if your card is a little scratched it may not work, and none of the credit card guys are allowed to simply type in the number.

you can get cash advances on your visa card ( and prolly most other major cards too)at any Thomas Cook outlet. Here's a list of them:
http://www.thomascook.co.in/opencms/...anch_india.jsp

I did almost the same thing- I forgot to activate a new card before leaving home. Thos. Cook bailed me out. It felt like old times- going into a bamk for money, how quaint! carrying around wads of cash was also an old feeling, but India is so safe I never worried.
You'll be fine

Cash advance on a credit card is pretty expensive, isn't it?

Cash advance fee, Interest charged from that day.
Probably a higher exchange rate too.

If you have online-banking you can pay your credit card as soon as you take the cash --- or even before!

But that means making sure there's an internet cafe as well as an ATM, of course...

Banks normally outsource the operating of ATM machines. If they have a 24/7 call center, I would suggest you to call them and check exactly what their policy is. If it is localy operated (by the branch employees), you are at luck and may get it on Tuesday itself.

Namaste all IM's,
GOOD NEWS, I was able to obtain my ATM cars after sweating for three days, chewing off all my fingernails and any skin I could off my fingers.

Tomorrow my son and I will be on our way to India.
peace, gregor

Be aware that if your card is swallowed in India, the bank is legally obliged to return it to the issuing bank.

As my issuing bank is in Yorkshire, I'm really hoping that this doesn't happen.

Some Indian ATM's don't tell you how to have the card turned on insertion. Some don't tell you that you are to insert it and then withdraw it to start the procedure; some pull the card inside, not allowing you to withdraw it until you make the correct next move. Fortunately, I hade more than one card to choose from, after having one invalidated, supposedly because of my thrice not entering the correct PIN code. I hadn't even entered one, just removed the card and inserted it turned about because of not getting the expected response. Fortunately again, I not only managed to get it right with the second card, but remembered how to do it on subsequent efforts.
