Question what kind of shoes/boots for trekking in the Himalayas

Hey,

what kind of shoes would you recommend for trekking in the Himalayas?

We are going to India (and perhaps Nepal) in august and september and Himalayas are only a smaller part of our trip. It won't be any hard core trekking but rather touristy trekking in 5000m max. altittude (or maybe slightly higher in Ladakh).

Is it worth taking solid (high) trekking boots? Or is it sufficent to take just good (low) trekking shoes, which would make our bags lighter and also could be used during non-treking parts of our trip?

Thanx
Nora

By "touristy trekking" I assume you mean three days or so of trekking. Get the light boots.

If your trekking is likely to exceed 8 days, get the heavy duty boots.

Porters in the Indian Himalaya trek on canvas shoes; but I wouldn't dare attempt it.

Hi,

You don't need snowboots for trekking upto 13,000 - 14,000 ft. Go for light treking shoes with rubber treads and good ankle support. And for touring rest of India, you can use the trekking shoes/Sports shoes in addition to a sandal or flip-flops.

Hope this helps

Try the 'Berghaus Explorer IV GTX' boots, I had a pair and used them through the Himalayas on short treks. Light weight and can be used in hotter climate also. They were great! I have just purchased a new pair. I'm sure I have seen them in Prague camping stores. The price is also very reasonable. If you want some thing in a shoe, 'Merrel' make a great stuff.
