What does non-refundable mean when booking Air India?

Hey! This is my first post. Sorry I couldn't find a more relevant topic to post in.
I was just wondering though what "Lowest non-refundable" means when booking online with Air India. There is a massive price difference between non-refundable and refundable. Is it literally just explained in the name?
I am just really confused about the whole issue! Especially as there should not be such a price difference (£150ish).
Thanks for all your help!

You pay for flexibility when you book flights.

Whatever airline you use, if you get a non refundable flight it will be cheaper but you have only two choices: 1. Catching it or 2. Not catching it.

If you get a refundable flight, you also get the option of cancelling / changing your ticket, with varying conditions depending on the airline policy, what price the new flight is selling for and how far in advance you make the changes.

Such a price difference or even more is not unusual or surprising.
