I read it is illegal to bring rupees into India. But, as it is now my supervisor has some left over money that he would like to sell me. Well, if I bring these 4000 rupees into India and I'm stopped in customs, what happens? Anyone with any experience on this matter? Are they simply seized, am I fined, or am I deported? How serious is the offence?

I think if you just keep it in your wallet you can get away with it. No one in the history of me travelling has checked my wallet. But, if you want to be cautious, don't take my advice.

It is illegal to take rupees in or out of the country, unless you are normally resident in India, when, think, the limit is 5,000.

So get a damn good exchange rate from the guy --- or just walk away. He's doing you no favour, Rupees will be yours for the asking just as soon as you get off the plane.

What you have to ask yourself is --- why would an Indian customs official stop you? If they have reason to suspect you of anything, then I expect that Rs.4000 will get added to the list.

So long as there is no reason, (your not bringing a bag full of electric gadgets, or something, are you? they x-ray the cases) I wouldn't think about it.

I've certainly travelled with that much, or more!

But I wouldn't consider making a business out of it: they do stop people and prosecute them for currency smuggling, in and out. The amounts are somewhat higher!

"Intelligence", I think...

They stopped some guy leaving Chennai a few months ago; they wondered why the soles of his shoes were several inches high.

They were stuffed with currency!

Is 80 dollars worth of Rupees worth the risk? I mean, even if the guy gave the rupees to you for free, is that an amount you want to take a risk for?

Everybody's got a price, I just hope yours is higher.
