Wait to buy guide book on arrival in Delhi?

Are guide books for India readily available in Delhi? Would they be cheaper than buying in Canada, etc, and about how much? Wondering if I should buy it for $$$$$$ here, or wait to buy in Delhi.

if available, they might be cheaper. But a guide book is too important for a traveller to take a chance. but it and take it with you. be safe, not sorry.

I traveled to spain last summer. a friend of mine left the guide books on the plane. We could barely find any guide books in spain, and if we did they were in spanish.

Lonely Planet puts out a good Delhi Guide compact, full of info, and reasonable price. I'd buy that to peruse on the plane and get your bearings. Then you can pick-up almost any larger India or South Asian guide book in delhi that you could imagine depending on where you are going! If you want to be frugal hit the book market at Darya Gange in Old Delhi on Sunday Morning for a used travel guide book at very good price - bargain hard!

It's probably not incredibly hard to find if you know where to look... but from my experience, knowing where to look in North America and knowing where to look in Delhi are two very different things. Your first few days there, you may be severely jet-lagged, culture-shocked, tongue-tied, overwhelmed. Making simple purchases in India can be an adventure--fun and exciting, but not convenient or easy.

I liked having the guidebook for months before I left; it gave me plenty of time to make a rough plan of what I wanted to see and do, and to prepare for the needs of a traveler. Your mileage may vary. PeakXV's advice is pretty good too; if you at least have the guide to Delhi you'll have a starting point, that will get you by until you find a Delhi bookstore with a complete travel guide.

Even if you were to get it cheaper in India it will most definitely not be saving you a fortune. If you can pay $1500 for your airticket to India then why quibble over possibly saving $5.

If it's cost your thinking of just get to Delhi, there are many places on Paharganj and elsewhere, where you can pick up an older edition of Footprint/LP for around 300 rupees. You really don't need the newer editions for a trip around India, just be aware that the prices will have gone up!!
