Traveling with Photography/Videography Equipment

My husband and I will be going to India in November and since he is going to be shooting both stills and video for a project we're working on for the children's charity Smile Train, we are concerned about what is allowed and what is not allowed as far as carry-on baggage is concerned on internal Indian flights.

We will be taking Indian Airlines once from Delhi to Lucknow and then taking Kingfisher back to Delhi. Later on in the week, we'll be taking a round trip Kingfisher flight to Varanasi and back to Delhi.

I know my husband is concerned about having to check in any sort of camera equipment and would prefer to carry it all as carry-on luggage. However, the limit seems quite severe: 7 kgs/person (and does that not include a purse or laptop?).

In addition, I've been reading that batteries are not permitted as carry-on baggage. Is this true? Are there certain batteries that are permitted? He'll most likely be traveling with 2 Canon Camera bodies, a bunch of lenses and 2 video cameras along with chargers, etc...

Thanks for any advice you can provide on this!

You can usually get away with more luggage & carryon if you say you're a transit passenger. As for batteries, they are primarily concerned about dry cells (e.g. AAA cells). I've never had problems with specialized camera batteries (which to be safe you can put in your checked bags, anyway). It was worse in the days of film when they would try to open the bodies.
