Travel Checks .. how much ?

Hello !
I want to know how much do I carry in travel checks on my trip to India. I will stay there for 70 days, and I want to stay in places for backpackers, eat inexpensive food.

Lots of threads on this site about costs.

A rough estimate on the low scale would probably be between $600 to $1000 USD for that amount of time.

Personally for travelers checks I would use American Express in U.S. currency since it's excepted everywhere.

You can get by on quite a bit less, I am just throwing out that figure since larger cities are more money.

I never take traveller checks, but next time it might be a good idea to take some.

I ve tried to change money recently in Omkareshwar, and they will accept Traveller checks (at the very low rate of 41 Rs to the dollar), but they will NOT take cash .
I ve tried banks, shopkeepers, electronic shops, guesthouse-owners but nobody wants cash dollar/euro.
A fellow traveller helped me out .
