A sheet sleeping bag is definately worth using just about everywhere -- it will be clean and is a good protection against bedbugs. But you'll certainly be warm enough without a proper sleeping bag, as most hotels have blankets of some sort (which you may need in Darjeeling and Sikkim).

you won't need a bag (unless maybe you're trekking) but i always find uses for my very compact and light weight summer bag....it's saved me from a few cold nights on trains!

You'll never know.....
....in what kind of hotel you will stay.
We used to take a very old, well washed Duvet Cover, which is great to double as a sheetbag, but can also be used as a big beach towel, a sun cover etc. Hans

I doubt you'll need a sleeping bag. That said, a cotton sheet sleeping bag can be useful. You can get one made for next to nothing when you arrive in India.

Jedigar, they're all right. Although if u're going trekking/mountaineering or backpacking it makes sense. Also the smell of something familiar makes it much more easier to sleep in new, strange places. I used to sleep in my sleeping bag even in a room as it was much more easier to become comfortable in new places. The sleeping bag lasted about 10 yrs. I wish I still had it.

in fact i reccomend anyone to bring a sleeping bag for any trip to india. either: 1) a light +10 summer bag 2) warm (as in the OP's case) 0' 3) super warm down sleeper, lots of mountain travel -10 at anyrate, the beds in India... well, they sorta stink, little mold, little this little that you know something special...so, when i get to my room i just put the sleep bag over the bed, no matter how clean it supposeed to be. sort a clean barrier. a comfort of home and also rather useful too for bed bugs. |

I'd disagree. Just sheets would do. Clean sheets are often the concern, and sleeping bag isnt easy to clean AfaIk. A good bunch of sheets bought in India would be inexpensive and serve you well.

I was really glad to have my sleeping bag on both trips. It is a relatively lightweight one, but not only kept me warm but also comfortable on those less than soft beds.

Yup, also if somebody is going back via Pune/Mumbai & wanna giveaway their sleeping bag/s most welcome. I do some amount of trekking, mountaineering in the Sahyadris & good sleeping bags are always in short supply. In fact for the wanderers out there, I would recommend coming with a good tent so save money while also enjoy nature.

i took a sleeping bag and hardly used it except for trekking but the company would have provided one if i hadn't had one.
In Singapore i put my sleeping bag on a mattress i thought was a bit sus and then ended up having to have the whole thing properly laundered incase of bedbugs. My advice, if you suspect the bed's not clean use your sleeping sheet and NOTHING ELSE. sleep naked and shower really well the next day. i made the mistake of putting my sleeping bag down and putting my pack at the end of my bed and ended up paying a fortune to get it all bed bug free. |

Sleeping bags are largely unnecessary in plains India. When in the mountains even the cheapest budget hotel will supply you with blankets! The only time I can think of that I used a sleeping bag was very occasionaly on a train where the window wouldn't shut properly but a cheap woolen blanket does the job just as well and they're very cheap!
Sensi if your sheets are dirty just request clean ones, simple!! I've found a quilt cover that you can get inside, to be very handy through the years you can buy them in India for around 80 rupees for a white cotton one!! |
