Dollar is getting hammered by most currecies, By Baht and Rupees, in particular.

1 US Dollar: 39.50 Rs, market rate.

It will be slightly higher with banks, but one can count on Shady Travel agents to get better rates than banks.

A good time for one more visit to India, Mate.

Cheers,

yes, but anomolies do exist and sometimes the market can misprice them breifly. As would be the case if the rates were what Vandy quoted.
But, the big boys have Cray super computers waiting to pounce on this in a second. A fine Kashmiri boy graduated from Wharton MBA and went to NY for a top level finance job told me that I had as much chance at beating that as being elected Queen of England. Now in local areas like mofussil or remote locations you might find something but how to predict. Every Sept. I think of that fine young man and the role of fate..

Australian notes can be changed at most places - I changed mine here with no problem. The Aus$ is doing quite well here - as for Indian rupees - like edwardesco I like to have some to pay for my taxi to hotel etc. and not have to do changing at midnight and find nothing is open. Around 800 rupees would certainly tide you over for this- and that is what I would do. I just retain what i have left before I go out of India and then use them when I come back in. I don't bother with travellers' cheques - just use Australian dollars and ATM card. With all the fees involved in converting Aus dollars to American dollars is it worth it? Keeping in mind the exchange rate bet. Aus. and US?

Another thought which i don't think has been mentioned, how would you know your rupees weren't counterfeit if you didn't know what they looked like? 500's and 1000 rupee notes are what are usually counterfeited (in a big way, I might add) and they are banned bringing into Nepal, in case of counterfeit.

For holiday travellors, variations in exchange rate is just something that has to be lived with: there will be bad trips and good trips.

Last year pounds and dollars were buying lots of ruppees. This year they are buying "very less".

very sad....

Didn't see this earlier.

The interbank rate is about 39.50, which means if you sell, you will get closer to 39, and if you buy, closer to 40.

In this site's Travel section you'll find this Converter, handy for other conversions too.

My personal favorite is http://oanda.com/ , but there are indeed many.

Heres a decent place for Indian rupee vs major currencies, and some minor ones too. These are interbank rates, I think

Think your missing my point. I was under the impression that the rate of exchange was higher in india, also that it varied a lot due to where you exchanged it, ie not always the bank.
This year i changed some money with a little guy who was operating from a jewellery shop the rate was much higher than the local bank. Don't think you can find this info on Google,do you.
