taking Japanese yen to India
Has anyone tried exchanging Japanese yen in India? I live in Japan where everyone uses cash and credit / debit cards are almost non-existent. I don't really want to change all my money into US dollars / travelers cheques and then change it again when I get to India, as I would lose quite a bit through exchange rates and fees.
Any ideas? Thanks, Richard. |

Though many banks / exchange bureaus do exchange Japanese Yen, you might not get competitive exchange rates. For the more widely used currencies - US$, Eur, Pound, DM you'll have wider and easier acceptance and also good rates.
You'll be better carrying some part of your cash in US$ and the balance in Yen. Credit / debit cards are generally widely accepted in India and you could carry one as a back up. |

You will not have a problem exchanging Japanese Yen in the major cities but in the smaller towns you may have a problem. Bring your debit card and use it to withdraw cash. You will get a very good ecxchange rate when you use your debit card to withdraw rupees.

As mentioned before, you can use cc/dc in India but keep some USD too.
